  • Localized flooding likely in Crawford and northern Lower Michigan
  • Detroit metro area and Oakland County hit hard
  • Southern Saginaw County and northwest Genesee County also drenched
  • Persistent moisture pattern fueling summer storms

Heavy rainfall moved across Michigan on the night of July 16, continuing into the early hours of July 17, 2025, with highly variable precipitation totals depending on location. Radar data confirms that while some areas remained dry, other regions were drenched with over 5 inches (127 mm) of rain, and even higher totals in isolated pockets.

Localized flooding likely in Crawford and northern Lower Michigan

The heaviest rainfall was recorded in northern Lower Michigan, where the official total reached 5.36 inches (136.2 mm) in Crawford. Between Grayling and Frederic, radar estimates suggest 6 to 8 inches (152 to 203 mm) of rain fell, highlighting the intense, localized nature of the storm. Yellow-shaded areas on the radar maps indicate locations with at least 2 inches (50.8 mm) of rain, signaling widespread soaking conditions throughout the region.

Detroit metro area and Oakland County hit hard

A focused view of Oakland County, including the Detroit metro area, reveals that northeast of Rochester, radar estimates show rainfall totals approaching 6 inches (152 mm). This intense cell developed rapidly and remained nearly stationary for hours, leading to saturation-level accumulations and likely localized street flooding.

Southern Saginaw County and northwest Genesee County also drenched

Radar imagery and ground reports from southern Saginaw County and the northwest corner of Genesee County confirm precipitation totals surpassing 5 inches (127 mm). These totals place both counties among the hardest-hit zones during the July 16–17 rain event.

Persistent moisture pattern fueling summer storms

The broader atmospheric setup shows no significant shift in pattern, with elevated moisture levels continuing to dominate over Michigan. This sustained humid air mass is primed to generate more intense thunderstorms and flash flooding potential in the coming weeks. As long as high dew points and warm surface temperatures remain in place, heavy rainfall events like this one are expected to recur across the state throughout the summer.
