On Monday night<\/strong>, much of the northern tier of the United States<\/strong> will have a strong chance<\/em> to witness the northern lights<\/strong>, following a burst of geomagnetic activity<\/strong> that originated from a less dense, high-speed stream of solar wind<\/em> emerging from a cooler region on the sun\u2019s surface<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

Where the northern lights will likely be visible<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The NOAA<\/strong> forecast highlights a Kp index<\/strong> of 3 to nearly 4<\/strong> (on a scale of 0 to 9), suggesting moderate geomagnetic activity<\/strong> capable of pushing the aurora farther south<\/em> than usual. A Kp index of 5<\/strong> was registered Sunday night into early Monday<\/strong>, signaling a brief but intense geomagnetic storm.<\/p>\n

The best viewing zones<\/strong> for Monday night<\/strong> stretch across the Upper Midwest<\/strong> and Northeast<\/strong>, particularly in:<\/p>\n

Northeastern Washington<\/strong>, Northern Idaho<\/strong>, Montana<\/strong>, North Dakota<\/strong>, Northern Minnesota<\/strong>, Upper Michigan<\/strong>, and Northern Wisconsin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If skies remain clear, parts of South Dakota<\/strong> and Maine<\/strong> might also catch glimpses of the aurora near the horizon.<\/p>\n

Most of Alaska<\/strong> and Northern Canada<\/strong> remain within the high-probability zone, offering even stronger opportunities for spectacular displays.<\/p>\n

Optimal viewing time and conditions<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The prime window<\/strong> for viewing will be between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time<\/strong>, when skies are darkest<\/strong> and the aurora borealis<\/strong> is most active.<\/p>\n

For the clearest experience, seek out a north-facing high vantage point<\/strong> with minimal light pollution<\/strong>. Rural areas far from city lights provide the best conditions.<\/p>\n

Tips for photographing the northern lights<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If you’re aiming to capture the moment:<\/p>\n

  • Smartphone users<\/strong> should activate night mode<\/strong>, disable flash<\/strong>, and reduce shutter speed<\/strong> to allow more light.<\/li>\n
  • DSLR and mirrorless camera users<\/strong> will want a wide-angle lens<\/strong>, an aperture (F-stop) of 4 or lower<\/strong>, and a focus set to infinity<\/strong>. A tripod is essential for long exposures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    We are currently in an active solar period<\/strong>, known as the solar maximum<\/strong>, which peaked in October 2024<\/strong> and is projected to persist through early 2026<\/strong>. This cycle increases the frequency and strength of geomagnetic events\u2014leading to more frequent and intense auroral displays across North America<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
