It\u2019s all about its <strong>location<\/strong> and <strong>shape<\/strong>. Situated directly northeast of <strong>Lower Michigan<\/strong>, its long fetch \u2014 or uninterrupted water path \u2014 allows <strong>northeast winds<\/strong> to pick up moisture and cold, spreading it deep into <strong>central<\/strong> and <strong>southern Michigan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Temperature drop timeline: May 6 to May 8<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As shown in the <strong>NOAA surface temperature forecast animation<\/strong>, the <strong>northeast wind<\/strong> begins to <strong>develop on Wednesday afternoon<\/strong>, May 7, and intensifies overnight into <strong>Thursday, May 8<\/strong>. Here\u2019s how it unfolds:<\/p>\n<p>By <strong>3 p.m. Wednesday<\/strong>, cities like <strong>Grand Rapids<\/strong>, <strong>Kalamazoo<\/strong>, <strong>Lansing<\/strong>, <strong>Ann Arbor<\/strong>, <strong>Jackson<\/strong>, and <strong>Detroit<\/strong> will still enjoy <strong>mild temperatures<\/strong>, while <strong>Flint<\/strong> and the <strong>Saginaw Valley<\/strong> start to cool under the approaching wind.<\/p>\n<p>By <strong>7 p.m. Wednesday<\/strong>, the chill grips <strong>northern Michigan<\/strong>, with <strong>Traverse City<\/strong> already in the icy air mass.
