While not a tropical system itself, this gyre can help initiate the development of <strong>tropical depressions or storms<\/strong> in the <strong>Caribbean Sea<\/strong> or <strong>eastern Pacific Ocean<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>How the system could evolve and Florida&#8217;s potential exposure<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>According to <strong>AccuWeather&#8217;s lead hurricane expert Alex DaSilva<\/strong>, while the <strong>likelihood of tropical formation in May remains low<\/strong>, the <strong>conditions could become favorable<\/strong> due to warming waters and reduced wind shear in the region. The setup could include <strong>a dip in the jet stream<\/strong>, creating just the right environment for a system to spin up.<\/p>\n<p>If a tropical depression or storm does emerge, <strong>its most likely track<\/strong> would be <strong>northeastward<\/strong>, possibly passing over <strong>Jamaica<\/strong>, <strong>Cuba<\/strong>, and heading out to sea. While <strong>Florida is not currently in the storm\u2019s projected path<\/strong>, <strong>South Florida<\/strong> could still experience <strong>tropical downpours<\/strong>, especially around or after <strong>May 20<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Even with low odds, <strong>localized flooding<\/strong> remains possible in <strong>Jamaica<\/strong>, <strong>Cuba<\/strong>, and parts of <strong>Central America<\/strong>, and residents across <strong>southern Florida<\/strong> should remain weather-aware as the <strong>middle to late May period<\/strong> unfolds.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>What history tells us about May storms<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>May storms aren\u2019t rare. Since <strong>2003<\/strong>, <strong>11 tropical cyclones have formed in May<\/strong>, including <strong>Tropical Storm Bertha<\/strong>, which made landfall in <strong>South Carolina<\/strong> in <strong>May 2020<\/strong>. Early-season development tends to happen <strong>closer to the U.S. coastline<\/strong>, which limits warning time. These systems also tend to <strong>move slowly<\/strong>, making them major <strong>flooding threats<\/strong> despite their lower wind speeds.<\/p>\n<p>A few notable early-season tropical systems include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tropical Storm Ana<\/strong> (May 22, 2021)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tropical Storm Arthur<\/strong> (May 16, 2020)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tropical Storm Alberto<\/strong> (May 25, 2018)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tropical Storm Beryl<\/strong> (May 26, 2012)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>2025 hurricane season forecast: high risk for Florida<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This year\u2019s outlook from several forecasting groups is intense. <strong>Colorado State University<\/strong> anticipates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>17 named storms<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>9 hurricanes<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>4 major hurricanes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>AccuWeather<\/strong> is slightly more cautious but still expects a robust season:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>13 to 18 named storms<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>7 to 10 hurricanes<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>3 to 5 major hurricanes<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>3 to 6 storms<\/strong> could make <strong>direct impact on the U.S.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More critically, <strong>Florida<\/strong> has a <strong>92% chance<\/strong> of being affected by <strong>a named storm<\/strong>, <strong>65% for a hurricane<\/strong>, and <strong>35% for a major hurricane<\/strong>, all <strong>the highest in the nation<\/strong>. This places <strong>Florida<\/strong>, especially <strong>Palm Beach County<\/strong>, at elevated risk even before the season officially begins.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>What is a Central American Gyre and why does it matter?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A <strong>gyre<\/strong> is a <strong>slowly rotating area of low pressure<\/strong>, typically <strong>broad and disorganized<\/strong>, that forms near <strong>Central America<\/strong>. Though not a cyclone itself, it <strong>creates conditions conducive to storm formation<\/strong> when <strong>jet stream patterns<\/strong>, <strong>warm sea temperatures<\/strong>, and <strong>low wind shear<\/strong> align.<\/p>\n<p>These gyres are responsible for past <strong>preseason tropical storms<\/strong>, and while they rarely develop into hurricanes directly, they often serve as the <strong>catalyst for tropical development<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>National Hurricane Center monitoring begins May 15<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Although the <strong>National Hurricane Center (NHC)<\/strong> has <strong>not yet issued any advisories<\/strong>, daily <strong>tropical outlooks<\/strong> will begin on <strong>May 15<\/strong>.
