Severe damage across Jefferson and Orleans Parishes<\/strong><\/p>\n Strong thunderstorms<\/strong> pounded the New Orleans<\/strong> area on Wednesday, May 7<\/strong>, unleashing powerful winds<\/strong>, widespread flooding<\/strong>, and significant infrastructure damage<\/strong>, particularly in Jefferson Parish<\/strong>. The severe weather\u2014driven by a larger storm system sweeping across the Gulf Coast<\/strong>\u2014left tens of thousands without electricity and forced the early closure of schools and roads<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Flooding across the metro area<\/strong><\/p>\n The heaviest downpours<\/strong> hit the northshore<\/strong>, where Mandeville<\/strong> recorded 6.7 inches (170 mm)<\/strong> of rain by mid-afternoon. Other hard-hit areas included St. James Parish<\/strong> with nearly 5 inches (127 mm)<\/strong>, Metairie<\/strong> with 4.5 inches (114 mm)<\/strong>, and most other communities with 2 to 3 inches (50\u201376 mm)<\/strong>. Water quickly overwhelmed major corridors<\/strong> like Earhart Boulevard<\/strong>, Canal Boulevard<\/strong>, and multiple streets in Mid-City<\/strong>, the Marigny<\/strong>, and the 7th Ward<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Wind wreaks havoc in Marrero and Harvey<\/strong><\/p>\n In Jefferson Parish<\/strong>, straight-line winds<\/strong> caused extensive damage<\/strong> in Marrero<\/strong> and Harvey<\/strong>, toppling utility poles<\/strong>, snapping power lines<\/strong>, and blocking streets. Medical Boulevard<\/strong>, adjacent to West Jefferson Medical Center<\/strong>, was shut down after hundreds of feet of lines<\/strong> collapsed. Barataria Boulevard<\/strong> and 6th Street<\/strong> were similarly affected.<\/p>\n Despite early fears of a tornado<\/strong>, the National Weather Service<\/strong> confirmed that the initial destruction was due to straight-line gusts<\/strong>, one of which hit 58 mph<\/strong> near New Orleans Lakefront Airport<\/strong>. A separate tornado<\/strong> with 80 mph winds<\/strong> was later confirmed to have struck Marrero<\/strong> during a different system.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Schools and neighborhoods left in the dark<\/strong><\/p>\n By 10 a.m.<\/strong>, approximately 18,000 customers<\/strong> in Jefferson Parish<\/strong>, 6,000 in Orleans<\/strong>, and 1,400 in St. Bernard<\/strong> were without power, according to Entergy<\/strong>. L.H. Marrero Middle School<\/strong>, St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School in Metairie<\/strong>, and Immaculate Conception School in Marrero<\/strong> faced power failures<\/strong> and plumbing problems<\/strong>, resulting in early dismissals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Utility crews from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development<\/strong> worked urgently to restore traffic signals<\/strong> and repair downed lines across the West Bank<\/strong>. Entergy<\/strong> pledged to restore service by midnight<\/strong> in most of Jefferson Parish<\/strong>, although many customers were expected to regain power earlier.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n More rain on the way<\/strong><\/p>\n The storm system<\/strong> hasn\u2019t passed yet. A flood watch remains in effect through 7 p.m. Thursday<\/strong> for Southeast Louisiana<\/strong> and South Mississippi<\/strong>.
