Dust storms are increasingly threatening<\/strong> parts of California<\/strong>, and scientists warn they\u2019re only going to become more common<\/strong> due to the intensifying effects of climate change<\/strong> and human land use<\/strong>. In November 2024<\/strong>, a powerful dust event in the Central Valley<\/strong> disrupted power and shut down traffic, offering a glimpse into what may be a more frequent hazard<\/strong> in the years ahead.<\/p>\n When strong winds<\/strong> whip across dry, exposed land<\/strong>, they kick up fine soil particles<\/strong>, reducing visibility and sometimes halting entire highways. This is exactly what happened last November<\/strong>, when gusts<\/strong> ripped through the Central Valley<\/strong>, forcing drivers to a standstill and cutting off electricity across swaths of the region.<\/p>\n According to Amato Evan<\/strong>, an atmospheric scientist at UC San Diego<\/strong>, dust storms can range from localized plumes<\/strong> to events spanning entire cities<\/strong>. Evan leads UC Dust<\/strong>, a collaborative initiative uniting researchers from across the University of California<\/strong> system to devise solutions to dust-related threats<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Their latest report reveals that dust storms<\/strong> not only jeopardize transportation and infrastructure<\/strong>, but also pose a significant risk<\/strong> to public health<\/strong>, especially in areas where human activity<\/strong> has transformed the landscape.<\/p>\n Dry regions in southeastern California<\/strong>, such as the Imperial<\/strong> and Coachella valleys<\/strong>, already experience dust storms regularly\u2014especially in spring, summer<\/strong>, and fall<\/strong>. However, human intervention<\/strong> has made other regions more vulnerable.<\/p>\n One stark example is Owens Lake<\/strong>. Once filled with water, the lake was largely drained<\/strong> in the 20th century to supply Los Angeles<\/strong>, leaving behind a dust-prone basin<\/strong> that now frequently emits fine particles<\/strong> into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n In the San Joaquin Valley<\/strong>, intensive agricultural development<\/strong> has stripped the land of protective vegetation, producing vast areas of fallowed farmland<\/strong>. According to Adeyemi Adebiyi<\/strong>, an atmospheric scientist at UC Merced<\/strong>, this bare, dried-up soil<\/strong> is particularly susceptible to wind erosion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act<\/strong> of 2014<\/strong> has also contributed. Aimed at conserving aquifers<\/strong>, the policy has led to reduced irrigation<\/strong> and the retirement of cropland<\/strong>, inadvertently increasing the area of dust-generating surfaces<\/strong>.<\/p>\n As temperatures rise<\/strong>, arid zones are growing even drier<\/strong>. \u201cWe get these less stable<\/strong>, more degraded soils<\/strong> that are easier for the wind to lift,\u201d said Evan<\/strong>. That drying trend not only weakens the natural vegetation<\/strong> that anchors the soil, but it may also extend dust storm zones<\/strong> into areas like the Sacramento Valley<\/strong>, where such events were once rare.<\/p>\n Beyond the inconvenience and danger posed to drivers, dust storms<\/strong> can have serious health consequences<\/strong>. Fine particles inhaled during storms are linked to asthma<\/strong>, respiratory illnesses<\/strong>, and negative pregnancy outcomes<\/strong>, according to Alexandra Heaney<\/strong>, a climate and health epidemiologist at UC San Diego<\/strong>.<\/p>\n A specific concern in California<\/strong> is valley fever<\/strong>, a respiratory illness caused by a soil fungus<\/strong> that can be carried by dust. Although the disease has traditionally been confined to the Southwest<\/strong>, including California<\/strong>, changing weather conditions could allow it to spread further<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Heaney is leading a new study<\/strong> that will explore how maternal exposure to dust<\/strong> in California<\/strong> might correlate with adverse birth outcomes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Replanting native grasses and vegetation<\/strong> may help stabilize dust-prone soils, but these projects are both costly<\/strong> and resource-intensive<\/strong>, requiring water<\/strong> that is already in short supply.
