The <strong>National Weather Service (NWS)<\/strong> warns that this new system could bring <strong>damaging winds<\/strong>, <strong>heavy rainfall<\/strong>, and <strong>isolated tornadoes<\/strong> to areas still recovering from the <strong>previous storm outbreak<\/strong> on <strong>Friday, May 17<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tornado risk not off the table<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to <strong>Chuck Greif<\/strong>, senior meteorologist at the <strong>NWS office in Jackson<\/strong>, <strong>tornadoes remain a possibility<\/strong>, though the threat is somewhat reduced compared to last week\u2019s severe outbreak. \u201c<strong>The tornado potential will be less than what we saw with the last system that went through there, but it is not zero. It probably will be a little higher than it usually is for these situations,<\/strong>\u201d Greif explained.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Jackson office<\/strong> is currently in <strong>direct communication with emergency management officials<\/strong> and local recovery crews. Greif emphasized the importance of <strong>remaining alert<\/strong>, staying <strong>informed<\/strong>, and <strong>knowing where to go in the event of a shelter-in-place situation<\/strong>. \u201c<strong>Be prepared and know where you want to go to take shelter,<\/strong>\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOAA weather radios offline amid critical timing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Complicating matters is a <strong>temporary outage<\/strong> of the <strong>National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s (NOAA)<\/strong> emergency weather radio system. The system will be <strong>offline until at least Wednesday, May 22<\/strong>, due to <strong>scheduled upgrades<\/strong>. This creates a gap in a primary method of disseminating urgent weather warnings\u2014<strong>especially critical for rural and storm-prone areas like eastern Kentucky<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Multiple alert sources urged<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the <strong>NOAA radio network temporarily unavailable<\/strong>, the <strong>NWS<\/strong> is encouraging residents to <strong>rely on multiple alternative channels<\/strong> for alerts.
