However, over the weekend, <strong>meteorological patterns shifted<\/strong>, and now the <strong>expected highs have moderated slightly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Highs near 100 \u00b0F (38 \u00b0C), but not as extreme as feared<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>According to the <strong>National Weather Service<\/strong>, most of <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> will see <strong>daytime highs in the 90s \u00b0F (32\u201337 \u00b0C)<\/strong> through <strong>Friday<\/strong>, though <strong>localized peaks<\/strong> in places like <strong>Woodland Hills<\/strong> may <strong>graze 100 \u00b0F (38 \u00b0C)<\/strong>. Earlier forecasts had <strong>predicted 103 \u00b0F (39.5 \u00b0C)<\/strong> in those same regions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kristan Lund<\/strong>, a <strong>meteorologist with the NWS<\/strong>, attributes this <strong>downshift<\/strong> in projected heat to <strong>slight changes in atmospheric conditions<\/strong>, including <strong>more cloud cover<\/strong> and a <strong>weaker offshore flow<\/strong>. These <strong>subtle factors<\/strong> are enough to alter peak temperatures by a few degrees \u2014 a difference that determines whether or not <strong>heat advisories<\/strong> are issued.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>heat advisory<\/strong> is currently in effect for <strong>much of the Southland<\/strong> from <strong>11 a.m. Wednesday to 9 p.m. Thursday<\/strong>. However, <strong>some areas<\/strong> \u2014 including <strong>downtown Los Angeles<\/strong> \u2014 may <strong>later be excluded<\/strong> as updated forecasts clarify.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Still unusually hot for May<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While not breaking records, this heat is <strong>significantly above seasonal norms<\/strong>. For reference, the <strong>average high<\/strong> in <strong>downtown L.A.<\/strong> for <strong>mid to late May<\/strong> usually hovers in the <strong>mid-70s \u00b0F (around 24 \u00b0C)<\/strong>. This week&#8217;s projections mark a <strong>notable departure<\/strong> from that standard.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Fire danger elevated as heat pairs with dryness and wind<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>combination of heat, low humidity, and strong winds<\/strong> has prompted an <strong>elevated fire risk warning<\/strong>. <strong>Humidity levels<\/strong> in <strong>inland valleys<\/strong> are expected to <strong>plunge to as low as 8%<\/strong> by <strong>Wednesday<\/strong>, with <strong>gusty winds<\/strong> intensifying the threat.<\/p>\n<p>Expect <strong>wind gusts<\/strong> between <strong>30 to 45 mph<\/strong> across <strong>mountainous and hilly terrain<\/strong>, especially in regions like the <strong>Antelope Valley<\/strong> and the <strong>Santa Susana Mountains<\/strong>.
