After a short break in the rain, <strong>Wednesday<\/strong> brings back the wet pattern that has defined much of <strong>May<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Wednesday starts dry, but won\u2019t stay that way<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>morning hours<\/strong> will begin relatively dry, especially in <strong>New York City<\/strong>, with only <strong>light showers<\/strong> developing over <strong>central and southern New Jersey<\/strong>. These early sprinkles will be minor, barely enough to get your <strong>windshield wipers<\/strong> going.<\/p>\n<p>By <strong>late morning<\/strong>, however, expect <strong>more widespread and persistent rainfall<\/strong> across the <strong>tri-state area<\/strong>, including <strong>Manhattan<\/strong>, <strong>Brooklyn<\/strong>, and <strong>Queens<\/strong>. <strong>Afternoon conditions<\/strong> will turn significantly wetter, setting the tone for what looks to be a <strong>cold and gloomy stretch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Heaviest rainfall arrives Wednesday night<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>most intense downpours<\/strong> are forecast for <strong>Wednesday night into early Thursday<\/strong>. By <strong>Thursday morning\u2019s commute<\/strong>, <strong>Long Island<\/strong> will bear the brunt of the rain, though <strong>showers<\/strong> will linger elsewhere as well. Be prepared to step into <strong>puddles<\/strong> and <strong>misty streets<\/strong> across the <strong>five boroughs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Strong northeast winds and colder-than-normal air<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In addition to the rain, <strong>northeast winds<\/strong> will pick up. Expect <strong>steady breezes between 10 and 20 mph<\/strong>, with <strong>gusts<\/strong> up to <strong>30 mph<\/strong>, especially through <strong>Thursday<\/strong>. These winds, combined with the damp conditions, will keep temperatures feeling even <strong>chillier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Normal highs for <strong>late May<\/strong> hover around <strong>72\u00b0F (22\u00b0C)<\/strong>, but both <strong>Wednesday and Thursday<\/strong> will only reach highs between <strong>50\u00b0F and 55\u00b0F (10\u00b0C to 13\u00b0C)<\/strong> \u2014 about <strong>15 to 20 degrees below average<\/strong>. These values are more reminiscent of <strong>March<\/strong> than late spring, so <strong>sweaters and hoodies<\/strong> will be essential.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Slow improvement by Friday<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Weather conditions begin to <strong>gradually improve on Friday<\/strong>. While skies may not completely clear, there will be <strong>fewer showers<\/strong>, and temperatures will start a <strong>slow climb<\/strong>. Still, don\u2019t expect a full return to <strong>seasonal warmth<\/strong> right away.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highs on Friday<\/strong> will hover around <strong>60\u00b0F (16\u00b0C)<\/strong> \u2014 still <strong>well below the norm<\/strong> for <strong>Memorial Day weekend<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Cool but pleasant holiday weekend<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Heading into the <strong>three-day weekend<\/strong>, the cool theme continues. <strong>Saturday and Sunday<\/strong> will remain in the <strong>60s\u00b0F (16\u201320\u00b0C)<\/strong>, while <strong>Memorial Day Monday<\/strong> finally touches <strong>70\u00b0F (21\u00b0C)<\/strong>. It will be the <strong>warmest and sunniest<\/strong> of the three days, making it a good option for <strong>outdoor gatherings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That said, if you\u2019re planning a <strong>beach trip<\/strong>, the weather may feel deceiving. Even if it\u2019s mild on shore, <strong>ocean temperatures<\/strong> are still lingering in the <strong>low 50s\u00b0F (10\u201312\u00b0C)<\/strong> \u2014 <strong>far too cold for a comfortable swim<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>A springlike start to the summer season<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Despite lacking <strong>beach-worthy heat<\/strong>, this <strong>Memorial Day weekend<\/strong> could still be <strong>one of the driest<\/strong> in recent years \u2014 a welcome change after a series of <strong>rain-soaked holidays<\/strong>.
