Just a week ago, <strong>100%<\/strong> of the state was affected by some degree of <strong>dryness or drought<\/strong>, with nearly <strong>3%<\/strong> under <strong>D3 (extreme drought)<\/strong>. As of now, <strong>less than 1%<\/strong> is experiencing <strong>extreme drought<\/strong>, isolated in two counties in the <strong>southwest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to <strong>Laura Edwards<\/strong>, <strong>South Dakota&#8217;s state climatologist<\/strong>, recent <strong>storm systems<\/strong> have dropped <strong>substantial rain<\/strong> across most of the region. From the <strong>North Dakota border to I-90<\/strong>, rainfall reached <strong>4 to 6 inches (101 to 152 mm)<\/strong> in a week. In contrast, areas from <strong>Pierre<\/strong> down to the <strong>Nebraska border<\/strong> saw totals of <strong>2.5 to 4 inches (63 to 101 mm)<\/strong>. These amounts nearly match the <strong>monthly average for May<\/strong>, making it a <strong>significant precipitation event<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Persistent drought in the southwestern region<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Despite these gains, the <strong>southwestern corner of South Dakota<\/strong>, especially the <strong>southern Black Hills<\/strong>, continues to endure <strong>extreme drought conditions<\/strong>. This region has struggled for more than a year, with <strong>reservoir levels<\/strong> and <strong>surface water<\/strong> for <strong>irrigation<\/strong> remaining critically <strong>low<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis area is at a tipping point,\u201d Edwards said. \u201cIt could go either way, depending on how <strong>June precipitation<\/strong> shapes up.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Crop progress ahead of schedule thanks to dry spring<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>dry start to spring<\/strong> provided <strong>ideal planting conditions<\/strong> across <strong>South Dakota<\/strong>. According to the <strong>Crop Progress report<\/strong>, <strong>85% of corn<\/strong> is now planted, which is a <strong>20 percentage point lead<\/strong> over the <strong>five-year average<\/strong>. <strong>Half<\/strong> of the planted corn has already <strong>emerged<\/strong>. Similarly, <strong>71% of soybeans<\/strong> are planted, with <strong>23% emergence<\/strong>, far ahead of the average.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlanting went very quickly,\u201d Edwards noted. \u201cThen the rain arrived at just the right moment \u2014 we saw about <strong>three inches (76 mm)<\/strong> up here over the last week. It was perfect timing to support <strong>strong early growth<\/strong> and <strong>replenish soil moisture<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Summer outlook: warmer, drier pattern expected<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Although the <strong>recent rains<\/strong> have boosted <strong>soil moisture<\/strong>, forecasts point to a <strong>return to dryness<\/strong>. The <strong>Climate Prediction Center<\/strong> outlook for <strong>June through August<\/strong> shows <strong>above-average chances for below-normal precipitation<\/strong> across <strong>South Dakota<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That three-month period \u2014 <strong>April, May, and June<\/strong> \u2014 usually accounts for nearly <strong>40% of the state&#8217;s annual precipitation<\/strong>, according to Edwards.
