The <strong>sunshine<\/strong> now visible across parts of the region is just the calm before the next weather disruption. There\u2019s currently a <strong>Level 1 out of 5 severe weather risk<\/strong>, but that doesn&#8217;t mean residents are off the hook.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s coming this afternoon and tonight<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By <strong>early afternoon<\/strong>, <strong>scattered showers<\/strong> were already appearing near and <strong>south of Interstate 20<\/strong>, while a <strong>larger storm system over Mississippi<\/strong> was pushing eastward. This system is expected to bring <strong>damaging wind gusts<\/strong> up to <strong>60 mph<\/strong>, <strong>hail up to the size of quarters<\/strong>, and <strong>abundant lightning<\/strong> to <strong>Georgia<\/strong> as it moves in.<\/p>\n<p>While a <strong>tornado<\/strong> is not the primary concern, <strong>brief tornadoes can\u2019t be ruled out<\/strong>. The <strong>heaviest rainfall and strongest storms<\/strong> are forecast between <strong>late afternoon and midnight<\/strong>, with another round likely on <strong>Tuesday evening<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roads already impacted by wet conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This <strong>morning\u2019s soggy commute<\/strong> created issues on several key roads. <strong>Crashes<\/strong> were reported along <strong>I-75 NB at Highway 92 near Acworth<\/strong>, and also on <strong>I-20 EB before Lowery Boulevard<\/strong>, both around <strong>5 a.m.<\/strong> As of <strong>7:30 a.m.<\/strong>, areas that were dry were expected to remain so through <strong>late morning<\/strong>, offering a <strong>small window for outdoor plans<\/strong> before rain ramps up again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunday night\u2019s severe weather recap<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On <strong>Sunday evening<\/strong>, <strong>severe thunderstorm warnings<\/strong> and <strong>tornado watches<\/strong> peppered the <strong>North Georgia region<\/strong>, impacting areas like <strong>Cherokee<\/strong>, <strong>Bartow<\/strong>, <strong>Gwinnett<\/strong>, <strong>Fulton<\/strong>, and <strong>DeKalb counties<\/strong>. A <strong>tornado warning<\/strong> was issued as far north as <strong>Gordon<\/strong> and <strong>Floyd counties<\/strong>, with a <strong>severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado<\/strong> reported <strong>9 miles northeast of Summerville<\/strong> just before <strong>7 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thousands lost power<\/strong> across the region. <strong>North Georgia EMC<\/strong> and <strong>Georgia Power<\/strong> confirmed outages affecting <strong>hundreds of customers<\/strong>, especially in counties under <strong>severe thunderstorm watches<\/strong> until <strong>midnight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday and midweek outlook<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Storms will linger into <strong>early Tuesday<\/strong>, followed by <strong>another wave likely between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.<\/strong> The <strong>high on Tuesday<\/strong> will be a <strong>cooler 76\u00b0F (24\u00b0C)<\/strong> due to <strong>extensive cloud cover and ongoing rain<\/strong>. By <strong>Wednesday morning<\/strong>, skies are expected to clear temporarily, and <strong>temperatures will rebound into the 80s\u00b0F (upper 20s\u00b0C)<\/strong> as <strong>rain chances slowly diminish<\/strong> moving into the <strong>weekend<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep alert, stay weather-aware<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though a <strong>brief midday lull<\/strong> might allow for <strong>barbecues<\/strong> or a visit to the <strong>Atlanta Jazz Festival<\/strong>, <strong>residents are urged to stay alert<\/strong>. The potential for <strong>sudden, strong storms<\/strong> remains very real this evening and overnight.
