An unusually wet May for Long Island<\/strong><\/p>\n LONG ISLAND, New York<\/strong> \u2014 This May<\/strong> has turned out to be unseasonably wet<\/strong>, with more rain still on the way<\/strong>, capping off a month that already surpassed typical precipitation totals<\/strong> for this time of year. As of Wednesday<\/strong>, the National Weather Service<\/strong> had recorded 3.9 inches<\/strong> of rain at MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma<\/strong>, marking a notable increase of 1.08 inches<\/strong> above the average May rainfall<\/strong> of 2.81 inches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n According to Joe Pollina<\/strong>, meteorologist for the NWS<\/strong>, the last fully dry weekend<\/strong> on Long Island<\/strong> dates back to April 19\u201320<\/strong>. \u201cIt has been relatively unsettled as of late,\u201d he commented, reflecting on the string of wet weekends<\/strong> experienced this spring.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Wider state trends and shifting averages<\/strong><\/p>\n The excessive precipitation<\/strong> isn’t isolated to Long Island<\/strong>. Other parts of New York State<\/strong>, including the capital region<\/strong>, have also seen consistent rainfall<\/strong>. Reports from the State Weather Risk Communication Center<\/strong> at the University at Albany<\/strong> highlight that the Albany area<\/strong> hasn’t had a fully dry weekend since November 16\u201317<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Still, the frequent showers<\/strong> have played a crucial role in correcting a rainfall deficit<\/strong>. From January 1<\/strong> to now, Long Island<\/strong> has received 14.95 inches<\/strong> of rain \u2014 still below the seasonal norm<\/strong> of 18.33 inches<\/strong>. Just a month ago, the area was more than 3 inches below average<\/strong>. Pollina emphasized, \u201cThis is well-needed rainfall.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Warmer temperatures despite clouds and rain<\/strong><\/p>\n Interestingly, despite the persistent rain<\/strong>, May temperatures<\/strong> have run 2.4 degrees above normal<\/strong>. May 2 and 3<\/strong> brought a burst of early summer heat, reaching highs of 84\u00b0F and 87\u00b0F<\/strong> (29\u00b0C and 31\u00b0C), respectively. Subsequent periods, including May 10\u201313<\/strong> and May 15\u201318<\/strong>, also recorded normal to above-average temperatures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n However, the recent string of rainy days<\/strong>, especially from May 19 through Memorial Day<\/strong>, contributed to below-average daytime highs<\/strong>. Pollina added, \u201cA lot of people think we\u2019re in spring, we should see temperatures in the 80s \u2014 but not on Long Island. We don\u2019t see 80-degree temps until June.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Looking ahead: Summer showers likely<\/strong><\/p>\n As June<\/strong> approaches, the Climate Prediction Center<\/strong> indicates that Long Island<\/strong> has a 33% to 40% chance<\/strong> of seeing above-average rainfall<\/strong> through June, July, and August<\/strong>. While the current rainy stretch<\/strong> is expected to ease off at the end of May<\/strong>, Wednesday night<\/strong> comes with a 90\u2013100% chance of rain<\/strong>, tapering throughout Thursday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Friday night<\/strong> may bring a slight chance of precipitation<\/strong>, while Saturday morning and afternoon<\/strong> hold a 50% to 60% likelihood<\/strong> of showers.
