As of <strong>Wednesday<\/strong>, the <strong>National Weather Service<\/strong> had recorded <strong>3.9 inches<\/strong> of rain at <strong>MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma<\/strong>, marking a <strong>notable increase of 1.08 inches<\/strong> above the average <strong>May rainfall<\/strong> of <strong>2.81 inches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to <strong>Joe Pollina<\/strong>, meteorologist for the <strong>NWS<\/strong>, the <strong>last fully dry weekend<\/strong> on <strong>Long Island<\/strong> dates back to <strong>April 19\u201320<\/strong>. \u201cIt has been relatively unsettled as of late,\u201d he commented, reflecting on the <strong>string of wet weekends<\/strong> experienced this spring.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wider state trends and shifting averages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>excessive precipitation<\/strong> isn&#8217;t isolated to <strong>Long Island<\/strong>. Other parts of <strong>New York State<\/strong>, including the <strong>capital region<\/strong>, have also seen <strong>consistent rainfall<\/strong>. Reports from the <strong>State Weather Risk Communication Center<\/strong> at the <strong>University at Albany<\/strong> highlight that the <strong>Albany area<\/strong> hasn&#8217;t had a fully dry weekend since <strong>November 16\u201317<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the <strong>frequent showers<\/strong> have played a <strong>crucial role in correcting a rainfall deficit<\/strong>. From <strong>January 1<\/strong> to now, <strong>Long Island<\/strong> has received <strong>14.95 inches<\/strong> of rain \u2014 still <strong>below the seasonal norm<\/strong> of <strong>18.33 inches<\/strong>. Just a month ago, the area was <strong>more than 3 inches below average<\/strong>. Pollina emphasized, \u201cThis is well-needed rainfall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warmer temperatures despite clouds and rain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, despite the <strong>persistent rain<\/strong>, <strong>May temperatures<\/strong> have run <strong>2.4 degrees above normal<\/strong>. <strong>May 2 and 3<\/strong> brought a burst of early summer heat, reaching highs of <strong>84\u00b0F and 87\u00b0F<\/strong> (29\u00b0C and 31\u00b0C), respectively. Subsequent periods, including <strong>May 10\u201313<\/strong> and <strong>May 15\u201318<\/strong>, also recorded <strong>normal to above-average temperatures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the <strong>recent string of rainy days<\/strong>, especially from <strong>May 19 through Memorial Day<\/strong>, contributed to <strong>below-average daytime highs<\/strong>. Pollina added, \u201cA lot of people think we\u2019re in spring, we should see temperatures in the 80s \u2014 but not on Long Island. We don\u2019t see 80-degree temps until June.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking ahead: Summer showers likely<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As <strong>June<\/strong> approaches, the <strong>Climate Prediction Center<\/strong> indicates that <strong>Long Island<\/strong> has a <strong>33% to 40% chance<\/strong> of seeing <strong>above-average rainfall<\/strong> through <strong>June, July, and August<\/strong>. While the <strong>current rainy stretch<\/strong> is expected to ease off at the <strong>end of May<\/strong>, <strong>Wednesday night<\/strong> comes with a <strong>90\u2013100% chance of rain<\/strong>, tapering throughout <strong>Thursday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friday night<\/strong> may bring a <strong>slight chance of precipitation<\/strong>, while <strong>Saturday morning and afternoon<\/strong> hold a <strong>50% to 60% likelihood<\/strong> of showers.
