A hot and rainy summer ahead for Tucson<\/strong><\/p>\n Summer 2025 is shaping up to be wetter than usual<\/strong> for Tucson<\/strong>, with a monsoon<\/strong> expected to bring above-average rainfall<\/strong> across Arizona<\/strong>, according to the National Weather Service<\/strong>. Although the official monsoon season<\/strong> runs from June 15 through September 30<\/strong>, the rains typically begin a bit later<\/strong>, says meteorologist Alex Edwards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In 2024<\/strong>, the month of June<\/strong> ranked among the hottest and wettest<\/strong> on record, coming in as the fourth hottest<\/strong> and tenth wettest<\/strong>. This June<\/strong> could follow a similar pattern, especially after an exceptionally dry winter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Less snow, more rain: a surprising connection<\/strong><\/p>\n Edwards explains that dry winters<\/strong> often lead to more active monsoon seasons<\/strong>. The reason? The snowpack<\/strong> in the surrounding mountains<\/strong>. An abundant snowpack<\/strong> can delay the arrival of moisture<\/strong>, but this year, the mountains saw virtually no snow<\/strong>\u2014a condition that may pave the way for an early and intense monsoon onset<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Rising temperatures across all of Arizona<\/strong><\/p>\n Above-normal temperatures<\/strong> are anticipated statewide<\/strong>, although Edwards notes it\u2019s still difficult to predict just how much hotter<\/strong> it will get. He stresses the importance of monitoring the forecast<\/strong>, not only for storm activity<\/strong> but also for heat safety<\/strong>, particularly during peak sunlight hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Summer 2024: wet start, dry finish<\/strong><\/p>\n In 2024<\/strong>, Tucson<\/strong> recorded over five inches of rain<\/strong> (about 127 mm<\/strong>) during the first half<\/strong> of the monsoon season, but less than half an inch<\/strong> (just over 12 mm<\/strong>) in the second half<\/strong>. It was ranked as the 61st driest monsoon period<\/strong> in Tucson\u2019s weather records, which go back to 1895<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In mid-July<\/strong>, a storm complex<\/strong> swept through Pima County<\/strong>, bringing 70 mph winds<\/strong> (about 113 km\/h<\/strong>), microbursts<\/strong>, and triggering two tornado warnings<\/strong>. The storm uprooted trees<\/strong>, downed power lines<\/strong>, and ripped the roof off an auto parts store<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The heat was relentless too: June<\/strong> was the fourth-hottest<\/strong>, July the second-hottest<\/strong>, and August the sixth-hottest<\/strong> on record for the city.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Flash flooding and storm danger during monsoon season<\/strong><\/p>\n Tucson\u2019s monsoon<\/strong> can bring sudden, dangerous flash floods<\/strong>, catching hikers and drivers<\/strong> off guard.
