While earlier <strong>severe thunderstorm warnings<\/strong> have <strong>expired<\/strong> for several counties\u2014including <strong>Berkeley<\/strong>, <strong>Georgetown<\/strong>, <strong>Dorchester<\/strong>, <strong>Williamsburg<\/strong>, and <strong>Orangeburg<\/strong>\u2014the <strong>watch area<\/strong> still encompasses <strong>Charleston<\/strong>, <strong>Berkeley<\/strong>, <strong>Dorchester<\/strong>, <strong>Colleton<\/strong>, <strong>Beaufort<\/strong>, <strong>Williamsburg<\/strong>, and <strong>Georgetown Counties<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>High storm threat and upgraded risk level across South Carolina<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Earlier in the day, both the <strong>Midlands<\/strong> and <strong>Upstate<\/strong> were placed under a <strong>severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m.<\/strong>, as the <strong>Storm Prediction Center<\/strong> elevated the statewide storm risk to an <strong>&#8220;enhanced&#8221; level<\/strong>\u2014<strong>level 3 out of 5<\/strong>. This upgrade signals <strong>increased confidence<\/strong> in the development of <strong>strong to severe storms<\/strong> tied to a <strong>cold front<\/strong> pushing across the <strong>Palmetto State<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Primary threats: Winds over 60 mph and widespread damage risk<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>According to <strong>Live 5 First Alert Meteorologist Joey Sovine<\/strong>, the <strong>main concern<\/strong> lies in the potential for <strong>damaging wind gusts exceeding 60 mph (96 km\/h)<\/strong>. These powerful gusts are most likely to occur <strong>between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.<\/strong>, right along the <strong>leading edge of a broken storm line<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to these wind threats, <strong>hail<\/strong>, <strong>intense lightning<\/strong>, <strong>heavy downpours<\/strong>, and even <strong>isolated tornadoes<\/strong> are <strong>possible<\/strong>, contributing to the volatile evening weather pattern. Wind gusts within severe storms can <strong>exceed 100 mph (160 km\/h)<\/strong>, causing widespread <strong>tree damage<\/strong>, <strong>downed power lines<\/strong>, and <strong>scattered outages<\/strong> across the region.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Conditions expected to improve overnight<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>By <strong>mid to late evening<\/strong>, storms are forecast to <strong>exit the coastline<\/strong>, leading to a <strong>gradual clearing of the skies overnight<\/strong>.
