This crucial protection will remain in force <strong>until September 30<\/strong>, offering <strong>critical relief to households<\/strong> during the most sweltering months of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How the law works<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This legislation comes into play <strong>when the National Weather Service forecasts temperatures exceeding 95\u00b0F (35\u00b0C)<\/strong> or a <strong>heat index topping 105\u00b0F (40.5\u00b0C)<\/strong>. When these conditions are expected, <strong>electric utility providers across Missouri are prohibited from disconnecting power<\/strong>, even in cases of unpaid bills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forrest Gossett<\/strong>, the <strong>communications director for the Missouri Public Service Commission<\/strong>, emphasized that this protection is rooted in <strong>public safety<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<strong>\u201cThat was put in place to protect consumers during horrific hot weather spells, which, of course, we have a lot in Missouri,\u201d<\/strong> Gossett said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Billing still applies despite protection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the <strong>Hot Weather Law<\/strong> offers <strong>temporary immunity from disconnections<\/strong>, it <strong>does not eliminate the obligation to pay<\/strong>. Gossett underlined the importance of <strong>staying in communication with your utility provider<\/strong> and <strong>paying your bill if you\u2019re able<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<strong>\u201cJust because you&#8217;re protected from disconnection, you&#8217;re still liable to pay your bill,\u201d<\/strong> he said. <strong>\u201cSo I strongly encourage, as the consumer, communicate with your utilities.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simple ways to cut costs at home<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To minimize electricity usage during peak demand, <strong>Gossett recommends practical home adjustments<\/strong>, such as <strong>running dishwashers late at night<\/strong>, using <strong>washers and dryers during off-peak hours<\/strong>, and <strong>keeping window shades closed<\/strong>. These actions can <strong>collectively reduce your summer electric bill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Assistance programs for low-income residents<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For <strong>residents of Columbia<\/strong> and across <strong>Boone County<\/strong>, financial help is available. The <strong>CASH (Citizens Assisting Seniors and Disabled)<\/strong> program supports <strong>low-income individuals<\/strong> who\u2019ve already exhausted other avenues.
