\"\"A rare show over Upstate New York skies<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tonight<\/strong>, the skies across Upstate New York<\/strong> may turn into a spectacular neon display<\/strong>, as a severe geomagnetic storm<\/strong> brings the aurora borealis<\/strong> much farther south than usual. According to the NOAA\u2019s Space Weather Prediction Center<\/strong>, a G4-level geomagnetic storm<\/strong> is unfolding \u2014 a powerful phenomenon that could let northern lights<\/strong> shine as far south as Northern California<\/strong> and even Alabama<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The northern lights are expected to appear above New York between 10 PM and 2 AM local time<\/strong>, with the Kp index<\/strong> forecasted to hit 7 out of 9<\/strong>, a level strong enough to paint the sky in glowing hues. While the auroras<\/strong> may continue into Monday night<\/strong>, their intensity is expected to drop sharply, with a forecasted Kp of only 1<\/strong> by then.<\/p>\n

Where to watch the aurora in New York<\/strong><\/p>\n

To catch a glimpse of this rare event, head away from urban light pollution. Ideal vantage points include The Adirondacks<\/strong>, the shores of Lake Ontario<\/strong>, or the northern stretches of New York near Lake Champlain<\/strong>. The darker the sky and the clearer your northern view, the better your chances<\/strong> of witnessing the show.<\/p>\n

Cloud cover, light pollution, and atmospheric clarity<\/strong> are major factors in visibility. In the past year, Upstate New York<\/strong> has already enjoyed several aurora sightings<\/strong>, including stunning displays in May<\/strong>, August<\/strong>, September<\/strong>, and most notably, October 2024<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

How to capture the northern lights with your phone<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even if the lights are faint to the naked eye, your smartphone camera<\/strong> might pick them up clearly. Use night mode<\/strong>, and if your phone allows, adjust the exposure time to 10\u201315 seconds<\/strong>. Keep your camera still using a tripod or solid surface<\/strong>, and make sure your lens stays clean and focused.<\/p>\n

When to look up<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although precise timing is always tricky, experts suggest the best auroral activity tends to happen within an hour or two of midnight<\/strong>. That means your sweet spot<\/strong> for a chance at catching the aurora borealis<\/strong> in New York<\/strong> is likely between 10 PM and 2 AM<\/strong>, but it may appear anytime after sunset<\/strong> and before sunrise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
