According to the <strong>National Weather Service in Las Vegas<\/strong>, the desert skies are expected to erupt with <strong>showers and thunderstorms<\/strong> beginning today, continuing through <strong>Monday<\/strong>, with <strong>heavier rainfall targeting northwestern Arizona<\/strong> and the <strong>southern tip of Mohave County<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thunderstorm threats and flooding risks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>tropical moisture<\/strong> is <strong>residual from Tropical Storm Alvin<\/strong>, and its arrival brings a <strong>heightened threat of thunderstorms<\/strong>, some of which may be <strong>strong enough to produce outflow winds<\/strong>. These can stir up <strong>dust and debris<\/strong>, reducing visibility in open areas. The NWS warns that &#8220;<strong>strong outflow winds are a possibility with any showers that form<\/strong>,&#8221; increasing the concern for <strong>localized flash flooding<\/strong>, especially where soils remain hardened by recent dry spells. <strong>Southern Mohave County<\/strong> is under a <strong>Marginal Excessive Rainfall Outlook<\/strong>, meaning <strong>isolated flash flooding<\/strong> could emerge as the atmosphere continues to saturate.<\/p>\n<p>While initial <strong>virga showers<\/strong>\u2014rain evaporating before it hits the ground\u2014have been observed, <strong>tonight\u2019s storms<\/strong> may bring <strong>sufficient moisture<\/strong> to reach the parched surface. Residents across the <strong>Las Vegas Valley<\/strong> and beyond should remain on alert through <strong>early Monday morning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Temperatures cool temporarily before surging midweek<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With <strong>thicker cloud cover<\/strong> and <strong>enhanced atmospheric moisture<\/strong>, <strong>temperatures in Las Vegas<\/strong> are expected to dip <strong>5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit<\/strong> (<strong>3 to 6 \u00b0C<\/strong>) below the recent highs. That temporary <strong>cooldown<\/strong>, however, will be <strong>short-lived<\/strong>. By <strong>midweek<\/strong>, as the <strong>moisture exits eastward<\/strong> and a <strong>ridge of high pressure rebuilds<\/strong>, the mercury is forecast to <strong>rise sharply<\/strong>, reaching levels up to <strong>10\u00b0F (6 \u00b0C) above normal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>By <strong>this coming weekend<\/strong>, temperatures in the <strong>desert valleys<\/strong> will likely climb back into the <strong>triple digits<\/strong>\u2014well above seasonal averages\u2014pushing <strong>Death Valley<\/strong> into a <strong>Moderate HeatRisk category<\/strong> for <strong>Monday<\/strong> and potentially beyond. Heat-sensitive groups may experience <strong>increased stress<\/strong> as the desert heat returns in full force.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Windy conditions challenging for pilots<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For those taking to the skies, <strong>aviation conditions<\/strong> may prove <strong>challenging<\/strong>, particularly today and tonight. The <strong>NWS<\/strong> notes that <strong>south-southwest winds<\/strong> will continue throughout <strong>Monday morning<\/strong>, with <strong>gusts reaching 15 to 25 knots<\/strong>. <strong>Thunderstorms<\/strong>, particularly those forming in the evening, could bring <strong>unpredictable gusts<\/strong> and <strong>shifting wind directions<\/strong>, adding to the complexity of <strong>local and regional flight operations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wet weather may persist into Thursday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although a drier pattern tries to assert itself by <strong>midweek<\/strong>, the <strong>NWS<\/strong> expects that a <strong>northwest flow<\/strong> could keep <strong>scattered showers<\/strong> and <strong>gusty winds<\/strong> in play through <strong>Thursday<\/strong>. This is due to a <strong>mix of lingering tropical moisture<\/strong> and <strong>incoming shortwaves<\/strong>, which may continue to destabilize the region&#8217;s atmosphere. As the <strong>new ridge settles in<\/strong>, though, the <strong>heat will rebuild<\/strong>, driving <strong>temperatures in Las Vegas<\/strong> and nearby valleys back into the <strong>upper 90s to low 100s \u00b0F<\/strong> (<strong>37 to 40 \u00b0C<\/strong>) by <strong>Friday and Saturday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spotter activation and public awareness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Due to the <strong>unsettled conditions<\/strong>, <strong>NWS Las Vegas<\/strong> has encouraged <strong>trained weather spotters<\/strong> and the public to <strong>report any significant weather impacts<\/strong>, including <strong>flooding, wind damage<\/strong>, or <strong>dangerous lightning<\/strong>.
