Typically, <strong>Asheville<\/strong> sees average highs in the <strong>low to mid-80s\u00b0F (around 27\u201329\u00b0C)<\/strong>. But this summer, those values are expected to climb well above normal.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Above-normal temperatures projected across North Carolina<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Climate Prediction Center (CPC)<\/strong> has released a <strong>40% to 50% probability<\/strong> that <strong>North Carolina<\/strong> will experience <strong>above-normal temperatures<\/strong> from <strong>June through August 2025<\/strong>. This aligns with broader <strong>climate trends<\/strong> indicating that <strong>summers are warming<\/strong> across the region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Bermuda high<\/strong>, a <strong>dominant pressure system<\/strong> influencing the <strong>Southeast U.S.<\/strong>, is expected to contribute to this warmth by channeling <strong>hot, humid air from the south<\/strong> into <strong>western North Carolina<\/strong>. Davis noted, <strong>\u201cIn recent years, we&#8217;ve generally run warmer than normal during the summer season.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Western North Carolina feeling the heat<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In <strong>Asheville<\/strong>, the annual average includes about <strong>10 to 11 days in the 90s\u00b0F (32\u00b0C or higher)<\/strong>. Last year, the city registered <strong>14 such days<\/strong>, marking a steady <strong>upward trend in extreme heat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the heat coincides with continued <strong>recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene<\/strong>, meaning many residents are spending <strong>prolonged hours outdoors<\/strong>, making <strong>heat-related illness<\/strong> a growing concern.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Public health warnings: know the signs of heat illness<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Dr. Ellis Matheson<\/strong>, <strong>Public Health Director for Buncombe County<\/strong>, emphasized the importance of recognizing early symptoms of <strong>heat stress<\/strong>, including <strong>heavy sweating<\/strong>, <strong>muscle cramps<\/strong>, and <strong>fatigue<\/strong>. Escalating symptoms like <strong>nausea<\/strong>, <strong>dizziness<\/strong>, <strong>rapid heartbeat<\/strong>, and <strong>confusion<\/strong> may point to <strong>heat exhaustion or heat stroke<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS)<\/strong> issues <strong>Heat Health Alerts<\/strong> when the <strong>heat index reaches 94\u00b0F (34\u00b0C) or higher<\/strong>.
