Hotter-than-average summer forecast for Asheville and beyond<\/strong><\/p>\n ASHEVILLE, North Carolina \u2014 Tuesday, June 3, 2025, 9:00 a.m. (EDT)<\/strong> \u2014 A hot and humid summer<\/strong> is quickly approaching North Carolina<\/strong>, and experts are urging residents to prepare for higher-than-average temperatures<\/strong>, particularly across western parts<\/strong> of the state like Asheville<\/strong>.<\/p>\n According to Corey Davis<\/strong>, Assistant State Climatologist for North Carolina<\/strong>, May<\/strong> provided a short reprieve from intense warmth, but that\u2019s ending. \u201cWe avoided a lot of summer-like heat in May,\u201d<\/strong> Davis noted, adding that by early June<\/strong>, the heat will arrive right on time<\/strong>. Typically, Asheville<\/strong> sees average highs in the low to mid-80s\u00b0F (around 27\u201329\u00b0C)<\/strong>. But this summer, those values are expected to climb well above normal.<\/p>\n The Climate Prediction Center (CPC)<\/strong> has released a 40% to 50% probability<\/strong> that North Carolina<\/strong> will experience above-normal temperatures<\/strong> from June through August 2025<\/strong>. This aligns with broader climate trends<\/strong> indicating that summers are warming<\/strong> across the region.<\/p>\n The Bermuda high<\/strong>, a dominant pressure system<\/strong> influencing the Southeast U.S.<\/strong>, is expected to contribute to this warmth by channeling hot, humid air from the south<\/strong> into western North Carolina<\/strong>. Davis noted, \u201cIn recent years, we’ve generally run warmer than normal during the summer season.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n In Asheville<\/strong>, the annual average includes about 10 to 11 days in the 90s\u00b0F (32\u00b0C or higher)<\/strong>. Last year, the city registered 14 such days<\/strong>, marking a steady upward trend in extreme heat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n This year, the heat coincides with continued recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene<\/strong>, meaning many residents are spending prolonged hours outdoors<\/strong>, making heat-related illness<\/strong> a growing concern.<\/p>\n Dr. Ellis Matheson<\/strong>, Public Health Director for Buncombe County<\/strong>, emphasized the importance of recognizing early symptoms of heat stress<\/strong>, including heavy sweating<\/strong>, muscle cramps<\/strong>, and fatigue<\/strong>. Escalating symptoms like nausea<\/strong>, dizziness<\/strong>, rapid heartbeat<\/strong>, and confusion<\/strong> may point to heat exhaustion or heat stroke<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS)<\/strong> issues Heat Health Alerts<\/strong> when the heat index reaches 94\u00b0F (34\u00b0C) or higher<\/strong>.
