This annual phenomenon, known as the <strong data-start=\"758\" data-end=\"779\">Saharan Air Layer<\/strong>, originates from intense winds over the <strong data-start=\"820\" data-end=\"837\">Sahara Desert<\/strong> that lift sand and fine particles high into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"529\" data-end=\"897\">\n<h3 data-start=\"899\" data-end=\"965\"><strong data-start=\"903\" data-end=\"965\">Dust to affect skies and air quality from Texas to Florida<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"967\" data-end=\"1334\">By <strong data-start=\"970\" data-end=\"981\">midweek<\/strong>, residents in <strong data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"1011\">San Antonio<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1013\" data-end=\"1024\">Houston<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1026\" data-end=\"1041\">New Orleans<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1047\" data-end=\"1056\">Miami<\/strong> will likely notice a <strong data-start=\"1078\" data-end=\"1097\">hazy, milky sky<\/strong>, reduced <strong data-start=\"1107\" data-end=\"1121\">visibility<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1127\" data-end=\"1157\">muted sunrises and sunsets<\/strong>. While the spectacle in the sky may seem beautiful, <strong data-start=\"1210\" data-end=\"1225\">air quality<\/strong> will deteriorate across parts of the <strong data-start=\"1263\" data-end=\"1276\">Southeast<\/strong>, especially for those with <strong data-start=\"1304\" data-end=\"1333\">respiratory sensitivities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"967\" data-end=\"1334\">\n<h3 data-start=\"1336\" data-end=\"1388\"><strong data-start=\"1340\" data-end=\"1388\">Saharan Air Layer reaches the Gulf of Mexico<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1390\" data-end=\"1788\">According to the <strong data-start=\"1407\" data-end=\"1435\">National Weather Service<\/strong>, the dust layer reached the <strong data-start=\"1464\" data-end=\"1490\">eastern Gulf of Mexico<\/strong> late <strong data-start=\"1496\" data-end=\"1507\">Tuesday<\/strong>, and is expected to advance westward into <strong data-start=\"1550\" data-end=\"1565\">South Texas<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1570\" data-end=\"1592\">southern Louisiana<\/strong> by <strong data-start=\"1596\" data-end=\"1616\">Thursday morning<\/strong>. The dust cloud is traveling at high altitudes\u2014above <strong data-start=\"1670\" data-end=\"1699\">5,000 feet (1,524 meters)<\/strong>\u2014but enough of it is descending closer to the surface to affect <strong data-start=\"1763\" data-end=\"1787\">local air conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1390\" data-end=\"1788\">\n<h3 data-start=\"1790\" data-end=\"1846\"><strong data-start=\"1794\" data-end=\"1846\">Tropical development suppressed\u2014but skies dimmed<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1848\" data-end=\"2181\">Interestingly, while the <strong data-start=\"1873\" data-end=\"1891\">dry, dusty air<\/strong> helps to <strong data-start=\"1901\" data-end=\"1938\">suppress tropical storm formation<\/strong>, it also leads to <strong data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"1976\">less blue skies<\/strong> and a <strong data-start=\"1983\" data-end=\"2007\">warmer surface layer<\/strong> in affected areas. Meteorologists are tracking multiple <strong data-start=\"2064\" data-end=\"2078\">dust waves<\/strong> expected to move through the <strong data-start=\"2108\" data-end=\"2121\">Caribbean<\/strong> and into the <strong data-start=\"2135\" data-end=\"2152\">United States<\/strong> through <strong data-start=\"2161\" data-end=\"2180\">early next week<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2183\" data-end=\"2450\">Temperatures across <strong data-start=\"2203\" data-end=\"2218\">South Texas<\/strong> are expected to remain in the <strong data-start=\"2249\" data-end=\"2274\">low 90s \u00b0F (32\u201334 \u00b0C)<\/strong>, while <strong data-start=\"2282\" data-end=\"2301\">humidity levels<\/strong> will make it feel closer to <strong data-start=\"2330\" data-end=\"2348\">100 \u00b0F (38 \u00b0C)<\/strong>. Meanwhile, the <strong data-start=\"2365\" data-end=\"2373\">haze<\/strong> from the dust may linger until <strong data-start=\"2405\" data-end=\"2415\">Sunday<\/strong>, depending on upper wind patterns.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2183\" data-end=\"2450\">\n<h3 data-start=\"2452\" data-end=\"2505\"><strong data-start=\"2456\" data-end=\"2505\">Visibility drops and sunrise colors intensify<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2507\" data-end=\"2843\">Although the <strong data-start=\"2520\" data-end=\"2528\">dust<\/strong> poses minimal long-term health risks, the <strong data-start=\"2571\" data-end=\"2589\">tiny particles<\/strong> can irritate eyes, throat, and lungs.
