A dense plume of Saharan dust<\/strong> is traveling thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean<\/strong>, set to impact the weather in Texas<\/strong>, Florida<\/strong>, and much of the Gulf Coast<\/strong> this week. This annual phenomenon, known as the Saharan Air Layer<\/strong>, originates from intense winds over the Sahara Desert<\/strong> that lift sand and fine particles high into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n \n By midweek<\/strong>, residents in San Antonio<\/strong>, Houston<\/strong>, New Orleans<\/strong>, and Miami<\/strong> will likely notice a hazy, milky sky<\/strong>, reduced visibility<\/strong>, and muted sunrises and sunsets<\/strong>. While the spectacle in the sky may seem beautiful, air quality<\/strong> will deteriorate across parts of the Southeast<\/strong>, especially for those with respiratory sensitivities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \n According to the National Weather Service<\/strong>, the dust layer reached the eastern Gulf of Mexico<\/strong> late Tuesday<\/strong>, and is expected to advance westward into South Texas<\/strong> and southern Louisiana<\/strong> by Thursday morning<\/strong>. The dust cloud is traveling at high altitudes\u2014above 5,000 feet (1,524 meters)<\/strong>\u2014but enough of it is descending closer to the surface to affect local air conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \n Interestingly, while the dry, dusty air<\/strong> helps to suppress tropical storm formation<\/strong>, it also leads to less blue skies<\/strong> and a warmer surface layer<\/strong> in affected areas. Meteorologists are tracking multiple dust waves<\/strong> expected to move through the Caribbean<\/strong> and into the United States<\/strong> through early next week<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Temperatures across South Texas<\/strong> are expected to remain in the low 90s \u00b0F (32\u201334 \u00b0C)<\/strong>, while humidity levels<\/strong> will make it feel closer to 100 \u00b0F (38 \u00b0C)<\/strong>. Meanwhile, the haze<\/strong> from the dust may linger until Sunday<\/strong>, depending on upper wind patterns.<\/p>\n \n Although the dust<\/strong> poses minimal long-term health risks, the tiny particles<\/strong> can irritate eyes, throat, and lungs.
