May 2025<\/strong> brought a remarkably volatile and wet weather pattern<\/strong> across Colorado<\/strong>, pushing the state’s already unpredictable spring climate to new extremes. Despite the region’s reputation for rapid weather shifts, this past month stood out for its unusually high precipitation<\/strong>, lower-than-average temperatures<\/strong>, and a rare outbreak of damaging tornadoes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

Snowstorms and water concerns in the first week of May<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The month kicked off with a powerful snowstorm<\/strong> dumping over four feet of snow<\/strong> on Pikes Peak<\/strong>. While this snowfall was impressive, it melted rapidly<\/strong>, triggering high turbidity levels<\/strong> in local water systems. Manitou Springs<\/strong> faced a water quality crisis<\/strong>, highlighting how snowmelt and temperature spikes can compound into infrastructure challenges.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

Severe weather outbreak and record tornadoes<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The severe weather story intensified mid-month. Colorado recorded eight tornadoes in May<\/strong>, including four rated EF-2<\/strong>\u2014twice the annual average<\/strong> for that strength level in the state. The most active day was May 18<\/strong>, with three EF-2 twisters<\/strong>, followed by another on May 23<\/strong>. These storms brought considerable structural damage<\/strong>, underlining the increasing volatility of the Front Range and Eastern Plains<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rainfall well above seasonal norms<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Colorado Springs<\/strong> received approximately 3.3 inches (84 mm)<\/strong> of rain\u2014over 50% more<\/strong> than the typical 2 inches (51 mm)<\/strong> for May. Meanwhile, Pueblo<\/strong> saw just over 2 inches (51 mm)<\/strong> compared to the average 1.5 inches (38 mm)<\/strong>. The southern mountains and Front Range<\/strong> stood out with the highest rainfall surpluses<\/strong>, influenced by several atypical heavy downpours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

Clouds and rain keep temperatures cooler than average<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Frequent storm systems<\/strong> and thick cloud cover<\/strong> suppressed daytime highs throughout the month. In Colorado Springs<\/strong>, average highs hovered around 68\u00b0F (20\u00b0C)<\/strong>, while Pueblo<\/strong> saw temperatures just under 75\u00b0F (24\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014roughly 2.5\u00b0F (1.4\u00b0C) below normal<\/strong> for both cities. This chillier-than-usual May contributed to delayed wildfire risk<\/strong>, a rare reprieve for early summer in the state.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

June outlook: continued rain and a shift toward average temps<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Looking ahead, June is expected to remain wetter than average<\/strong>, especially in the first half of the month<\/strong>, fueled by abundant atmospheric moisture<\/strong>. According to the Climate Prediction Center<\/strong>, there\u2019s a strong probability for continued above-average precipitation<\/strong> across the state.<\/p>\n

In contrast, temperature forecasts are more uncertain<\/strong>. Current models suggest equal chances<\/strong> for near-normal, warmer, or cooler conditions<\/strong>, but early indications point to cooler weather persisting into mid-June<\/strong>, followed by a warmer second half<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
