NEW YORK CITY<\/strong> and a wide stretch of the Tri-State Area<\/strong> are under an Air Quality Alert<\/strong> today, Wednesday, June 4, 2025<\/strong>, as ground-level ozone<\/strong> concentrations are expected to approach or exceed unhealthy levels<\/strong>. The National Weather Service<\/strong> issued the advisory in response to a mix of sunny skies<\/strong>, hot temperatures<\/strong>, and light southwest winds<\/strong>, which are creating ideal conditions for ozone formation<\/strong>\u2014particularly along the I-95 corridor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

The alert remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.<\/strong> and includes key regions such as:<\/p>\n

In New York<\/strong>:
New York City<\/strong> and the Hudson Valley<\/strong><\/p>\n

In New Jersey<\/strong>:
Bergen<\/strong>, Passaic<\/strong>, Hudson<\/strong>, Essex<\/strong>, Mercer<\/strong>, Middlesex<\/strong>, and Union Counties<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Connecticut<\/strong>:
Fairfield<\/strong>, New Haven<\/strong>, Middlesex<\/strong>, and Northern New London Counties<\/strong><\/p>\n

Who is most at risk and when?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The most critical hours fall during the afternoon and early evening<\/strong>, when ozone levels peak<\/strong>. Sensitive individuals<\/strong>, including young children<\/strong>, the elderly<\/strong>, and those with asthma<\/strong> or other respiratory illnesses<\/strong>, should avoid strenuous outdoor activity<\/strong> during this time. This also applies to people who exercise or work outdoors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What’s causing the ozone spike?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Ground-level ozone<\/strong> is not directly emitted but is formed through sunlight-activated reactions<\/strong> involving nitrogen oxides (NOx)<\/strong> and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)<\/strong>. These precursors are released by vehicles<\/strong>, construction equipment<\/strong>, industries<\/strong>, and even gasoline vapors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s weather\u2014hot sun<\/strong>, low wind<\/strong>, and urban emissions<\/strong>\u2014is accelerating this reaction, worsening air pollution<\/strong>, especially in densely populated zones<\/strong> like Manhattan<\/strong>, Jersey City<\/strong>, and New Haven<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
