Tuesday storms bring unexpected rain to Southern California deserts<\/strong><\/p>\n Tuesday, June 3<\/strong>, brought unusual and intense weather<\/strong> across Southern California<\/strong>, especially in the high desert and mountain areas<\/strong>. In what is typically one of the driest months<\/strong> of the year, storms dumped significant rainfall<\/strong> and even pea-sized hail<\/strong> over parts of Twentynine Palms<\/strong>, Joshua Tree<\/strong>, and Idyllwild<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The most substantial rain fell in Twentynine Palms<\/strong>, where 0.79 inches<\/strong> of precipitation was recorded near Adobe Road<\/strong>. The volume of rain caused flooding<\/strong>, making Adobe Road from Raymond Way to Amboy impassable<\/strong> due to more than two feet of standing water<\/strong> in an area known locally as the “Adobe Punchbowl”<\/strong>. City crews are working to clear debris<\/strong> and reopen roads<\/strong> as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Palm Springs and Coachella Valley receive lighter showers<\/strong><\/p>\n The Palm Springs International Airport<\/strong> reported 0.11 inches<\/strong> of rain, while nearby Thousand Palms<\/strong> logged 0.23 inches<\/strong>. These totals were modest but notable for early June<\/strong>, a period that generally precedes the monsoon season<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Further up in the San Jacinto Mountains<\/strong>, Pine Cove Rocky Point<\/strong> near Idyllwild<\/strong> received 0.17 inches<\/strong>, while Big Bear Dam<\/strong> in San Bernardino County<\/strong> saw 0.20 inches<\/strong>. The combination of altitude<\/strong> and instability<\/strong> helped intensify showers over these elevated zones.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Hail, wind and more showers in the Joshua Tree region<\/strong><\/p>\n The storm system also hit the Joshua Tree National Park<\/strong> and surrounding areas hard, bringing strong gusts<\/strong> and hail<\/strong>. According to Jenn Soulat<\/strong>, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service<\/strong> in Las Vegas<\/strong>, the event was unseasonably intense<\/strong> for early June<\/strong>. While rain<\/strong> isn’t rare in the Mojave Desert<\/strong>, amounts nearing an inch are highly unusual<\/strong> outside of the summer monsoon period<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Forecast: Drying trend, intense heat returns<\/strong><\/p>\n As of Wednesday morning<\/strong>, the forecast called for only a slight chance<\/strong> of additional showers over Twentynine Palms<\/strong>, but most of the storm activity<\/strong> is expected to subside<\/strong> quickly.<\/p>\n In Palm Springs<\/strong>, the weather pattern is shifting<\/strong>. Sunny skies<\/strong> are forecast starting Friday<\/strong>, and a major heat wave<\/strong> is on the horizon.
