While rivers like the <strong>Yellowstone, Tongue and Musselshell<\/strong> in <strong>south-central Montana<\/strong> are still seeing <strong>normal or above-normal flows<\/strong>, many streams in <strong>western Montana<\/strong>, particularly along the <strong>Rocky Mountain Front<\/strong>, are seeing <strong>historic lows<\/strong>. The <strong>Dearborn, Sun and Marias rivers<\/strong> are flowing at rates <strong>much below normal<\/strong>, exacerbated by <strong>insufficient snowmelt<\/strong> and <strong>early irrigation withdrawals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Gibson Reservoir misses full mark for second year in a row<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Clayton Jordan<\/strong> from the <strong>Bureau of Reclamation<\/strong> confirmed that the <strong>Gibson Reservoir<\/strong>, west of <strong>Augusta<\/strong>, failed to fill again this year. It peaked at about <strong>20 feet below capacity<\/strong>, something that hasn\u2019t happened in <strong>consecutive years<\/strong> since the <strong>1940s<\/strong>. This shortfall has resulted in <strong>major irrigation cutbacks<\/strong>, with water allotments for <strong>Greenfields<\/strong> and <strong>Fort Shaw<\/strong> irrigation districts slashed to <strong>around 50%<\/strong> of typical levels.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Warm spring nights and dry April accelerate snowpack loss<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Following a <strong>decent snowpack<\/strong> buildup in <strong>February<\/strong>, <strong>unseasonably warm nights in March<\/strong> and a <strong>record-dry April<\/strong>, especially in <strong>Helena<\/strong>, quickly melted the snow reserves. By <strong>May<\/strong>, weather patterns turned erratic. <strong>Temperatures in Missoula<\/strong> soared to <strong>94\u00b0F (34\u00b0C)<\/strong> on <strong>May 31<\/strong>, beating the previous record from <strong>1986<\/strong> by 2\u00b0F. <strong>Kalispell and Butte<\/strong> also reported <strong>monthly averages<\/strong> over <strong>2\u00b0F (1\u00b0C)<\/strong> above normal.<\/p>\n<p>This heat led to <strong>early runoff peaks<\/strong>\u2014or in some cases, <strong>no peak at all<\/strong>, such as on <strong>Prickly Pear Creek near Helena<\/strong>. The early loss of snowpack means there\u2019s <strong>little reserve<\/strong> left to feed <strong>streams<\/strong> through <strong>July and August<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Hoot-owl closures likely as stream temperatures rise<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>With stream temperatures already creeping upward in <strong>Regions 2 and 4<\/strong>\u2014around <strong>Missoula<\/strong> and the <strong>Front<\/strong>\u2014<strong>Fish, Wildlife &amp; Parks<\/strong> managers are preparing for <strong>early hoot-owl closures<\/strong>. These <strong>restrict fishing during the hottest parts of the day<\/strong> to <strong>protect fish<\/strong>, particularly <strong>trout<\/strong>, from additional stress.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Multi-year drought dries out soil, shrinks river baseflows<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Beyond snowpack, <strong>long-term drought<\/strong> is depleting <strong>groundwater<\/strong>, reducing the <strong>baseflows<\/strong> that typically sustain rivers in dry months. <strong>Soil moisture<\/strong> is alarmingly low in places like <strong>Phillips<\/strong>, <strong>Liberty<\/strong> and <strong>Dawson counties<\/strong>. Farmers in <strong>Liberty County<\/strong> may abandon their <strong>winter wheat<\/strong>, while others in <strong>Dawson County<\/strong> say their <strong>alfalfa<\/strong> never even sprouted.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, about <strong>20% of Montana<\/strong> has experienced <strong>drought conditions for five consecutive years<\/strong>. <strong>Troy Blandford<\/strong>, of the <strong>Montana State Library<\/strong>, warns that these cumulative deficits\u2014often <strong>3 to 4 inches<\/strong> annually\u2014are starting to <strong>compound<\/strong> with serious consequences for water supplies and vegetation.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Vegetation health falters outside of south-central Montana<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Only <strong>south-central and southeastern Montana<\/strong> have maintained <strong>healthy snowpack and moisture<\/strong> since last <strong>October<\/strong>. Remote sensing data shows <strong>healthy vegetation<\/strong> in these areas, but elsewhere\u2014especially along the <strong>Rocky Mountain Front<\/strong> and near <strong>Peck Reservoir<\/strong>\u2014<strong>plants are visibly stressed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>June forecast favors heat and dryness<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>June, typically the <strong>wettest month for Montana<\/strong>, isn\u2019t expected to offer much relief. The <strong>National Weather Service<\/strong> predicts <strong>above-average temperatures<\/strong> and <strong>below-normal precipitation<\/strong> through the month, a troubling signal for farmers, water managers and <strong>firefighters<\/strong> alike.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Wildfire risk rising fast, with July and August looking worse<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>According to the <strong>National Interagency Fire Center<\/strong>, over <strong>half of Montana<\/strong>\u2014excluding the <strong>southeast and far eastern areas<\/strong>\u2014will face <strong>above-normal wildfire potential<\/strong> by <strong>July<\/strong>.
