This seasonal phenomenon, known as the Saharan Air Layer (SAL)<\/strong>, has now reached Central Florida<\/strong>, wrapping cities like Orlando<\/strong> in a visible haze.<\/p>\n The SAL<\/strong> is a hot, dry layer of air located between 5,000 and 20,000 feet<\/strong> above sea level. It moves westward on the back of powerful easterly trade winds<\/strong>, often unnoticed by travelers in high-altitude flights passing directly through it. But when it arrives over land, its presence becomes unmistakable.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Impact on air quality and health in Orlando<\/strong><\/p>\n The current Air Quality Index (AQI)<\/strong> in parts of Central Florida<\/strong> reflects moderate levels<\/strong>, which, while generally safe, can become problematic for sensitive individuals<\/strong>. The fine particulate matter<\/strong> contained in the Saharan dust may trigger symptoms in asthmatics<\/strong>, allergy sufferers<\/strong>, and anyone with chronic respiratory issues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n On days when the dust concentration increases, children<\/strong>, older adults<\/strong>, and individuals with heart and lung diseases<\/strong> are especially at risk.
