The <strong>National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)<\/strong> has forecast <strong>moderate geomagnetic disturbances<\/strong> that could extend the visibility of the <strong>northern lights<\/strong> much farther south than usual.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Where to look for the aurora borealis<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Based on the latest <strong>three-day forecast from NOAA<\/strong>, the aurora will likely be visible primarily across <strong>Canada<\/strong> and <strong>Alaska<\/strong>, but there&#8217;s a promising chance for visibility in the following <strong>eight U.S. states<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Northeastern Washington<\/strong>, <strong>northern Idaho<\/strong>, <strong>Montana<\/strong>, <strong>northern Minnesota<\/strong>, <strong>North Dakota<\/strong>, <strong>northern Wisconsin<\/strong>, <strong>Upper Michigan<\/strong>, and <strong>parts of Maine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Kp index<\/strong>, which measures geomagnetic activity on a scale of 0 to 9, is expected to reach:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kp 3<\/strong> tonight (Friday), potentially increasing to <strong>Kp 4<\/strong> by early Saturday morning.<\/li>\n<li>A stronger <strong>Kp 5<\/strong> is projected for <strong>Saturday night<\/strong>, following the impact of a <strong>coronal mass ejection (CME)<\/strong> that erupted from the <strong>sun on June 4<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A <strong>Kp index of 5<\/strong> signifies a <strong>minor geomagnetic storm<\/strong>, which is powerful enough to push the <strong>aurora borealis<\/strong> into latitudes across the <strong>northern Midwest and Northeast<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Best time and conditions to view the northern lights<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The best time to observe the aurora is between <strong>10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. local time<\/strong>, in areas with <strong>low light pollution<\/strong>, a <strong>clear sky<\/strong>, and a <strong>northward-facing view<\/strong>. Optimal viewing points include <strong>elevated areas<\/strong>, such as <strong>rural hills<\/strong> or <strong>lakeshores<\/strong>, especially in regions with a history of strong auroral activity.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>How to photograph the aurora borealis<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For those aiming to capture the moment, <strong>NASA<\/strong> offers these tips:<\/p>\n<p>With a <strong>DSLR or mirrorless camera<\/strong>, use a <strong>tripod<\/strong>, select a <strong>wide-angle lens<\/strong>, keep the <strong>aperture below f\/4<\/strong>, and focus to <strong>infinity<\/strong>. If you&#8217;re using a <strong>smartphone<\/strong>, activate <strong>night mode<\/strong>, disable the <strong>flash<\/strong>, and keep the device <strong>still<\/strong> during long exposures.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Why the auroras are more frequent now<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We are currently in the midst of a <strong>solar maximum<\/strong>, a peak phase in the <strong>sun\u2019s 11-year cycle<\/strong>. During this period, <strong>solar flares<\/strong> and <strong>CMEs<\/strong> are more frequent.
