Friday night visibility boosted by geomagnetic activity<\/strong><\/p>\n Tonight, Friday, June 7, 2025<\/strong>, parts of the northern United States<\/strong> may be treated to a dazzling display of the aurora borealis<\/strong>, thanks to recent solar activity<\/strong>. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)<\/strong> has forecast moderate geomagnetic disturbances<\/strong> that could extend the visibility of the northern lights<\/strong> much farther south than usual.<\/p>\n Based on the latest three-day forecast from NOAA<\/strong>, the aurora will likely be visible primarily across Canada<\/strong> and Alaska<\/strong>, but there’s a promising chance for visibility in the following eight U.S. states<\/strong>:<\/p>\n Northeastern Washington<\/strong>, northern Idaho<\/strong>, Montana<\/strong>, northern Minnesota<\/strong>, North Dakota<\/strong>, northern Wisconsin<\/strong>, Upper Michigan<\/strong>, and parts of Maine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Kp index<\/strong>, which measures geomagnetic activity on a scale of 0 to 9, is expected to reach:<\/p>\n A Kp index of 5<\/strong> signifies a minor geomagnetic storm<\/strong>, which is powerful enough to push the aurora borealis<\/strong> into latitudes across the northern Midwest and Northeast<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The best time to observe the aurora is between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. local time<\/strong>, in areas with low light pollution<\/strong>, a clear sky<\/strong>, and a northward-facing view<\/strong>. Optimal viewing points include elevated areas<\/strong>, such as rural hills<\/strong> or lakeshores<\/strong>, especially in regions with a history of strong auroral activity.<\/p>\n For those aiming to capture the moment, NASA<\/strong> offers these tips:<\/p>\n With a DSLR or mirrorless camera<\/strong>, use a tripod<\/strong>, select a wide-angle lens<\/strong>, keep the aperture below f\/4<\/strong>, and focus to infinity<\/strong>. If you’re using a smartphone<\/strong>, activate night mode<\/strong>, disable the flash<\/strong>, and keep the device still<\/strong> during long exposures.<\/p>\n We are currently in the midst of a solar maximum<\/strong>, a peak phase in the sun\u2019s 11-year cycle<\/strong>. During this period, solar flares<\/strong> and CMEs<\/strong> are more frequent.
