On the evening of Sunday, June 8<\/strong>, powerful thunderstorms<\/strong> swept through the heart of the South Carolina Midlands<\/strong>, bringing wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph<\/strong> (96\u2013113 km\/h). The severe weather<\/strong> knocked out power to nearly 142,000 Dominion Energy customers<\/strong> as of 9:50 p.m. local time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sharp drop in outages within minutes<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Just five minutes later<\/strong>, the number of customers without electricity dropped to 47,000<\/strong>, with 447 incidents reported<\/strong> on Dominion\u2019s official outage map. The hardest-hit areas included Lake Murray<\/strong> and Winnsboro<\/strong>, where downed lines caused major disruptions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Main cause: trees and limbs down on power lines<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A Dominion Energy spokesperson<\/strong> confirmed the outages were likely thunderstorm-related<\/strong>, with fallen trees and branches<\/strong> being the number one cause<\/strong> of storm-time outages.<\/p>\n

Crews working overnight to restore power<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Response teams<\/strong> were dispatched as soon as the first outage occurred<\/strong> and will continue working through the night<\/strong> until every customer has power restored<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Conditions expected to improve by midnight<\/strong><\/h3>\n
