As soon as <strong>thunder is audible<\/strong>, <strong>find a secure indoor location<\/strong>. Once inside, <strong>avoid using corded phones<\/strong>, stay away from <strong>electrical appliances<\/strong>, <strong>plumbing<\/strong>, and <strong>windows or doors<\/strong>. Stay sheltered for <strong>at least 30 minutes<\/strong> after the last thunderclap.<\/p>\n<p>If indoor shelter isn\u2019t possible, <strong>stay away from ridgelines<\/strong>, <strong>solitary tall trees<\/strong>, or <strong>elevated objects<\/strong>. Seek <strong>lower terrain<\/strong>, such as <strong>valleys<\/strong> or <strong>ravines<\/strong>, and <strong>spread out<\/strong> if you&#8217;re with a group to prevent current from traveling between individuals. Never assume a <strong>tent provides lightning protection<\/strong>, and <strong>avoid contact with metal<\/strong> or <strong>wet items<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Driving dangers: rain, road spray and hydroplaning risks<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Rain-related hazards also surge during storms like these. <strong>Visibility drops<\/strong>, <strong>roads become slick<\/strong>, and the risk of <strong>hydroplaning<\/strong> rises. To stay safer while driving:<\/p>\n<p>Turn on <strong>your headlights<\/strong>, even during the day. <strong>Drive in central lanes<\/strong> on <strong>elevated sections<\/strong> of roadways, where water doesn\u2019t pool as much. <strong>Avoid puddles<\/strong>, which may cause you to <strong>lose traction<\/strong> or <strong>skid<\/strong>. Stay clear of <strong>large vehicles<\/strong>, as their <strong>spray reduces visibility<\/strong>. If you reach a <strong>flooded road<\/strong>, <strong>turn around<\/strong> \u2014 do <strong>not drive through<\/strong>. <strong>Flash flood waters<\/strong> can be deceptive and powerful enough to <strong>sweep vehicles away<\/strong> or <strong>damage mechanical systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Understanding and reacting to hydroplaning<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Hydroplaning<\/strong> happens when a car <strong>slides uncontrollably<\/strong> on a wet road due to water pressure lifting the tires off the surface.
