According to the <strong>Storm Prediction Center<\/strong>, a significant portion of the state has been placed under a <strong>Slight Risk<\/strong> (highlighted in <strong>yellow<\/strong>) and an <strong>Enhanced Risk<\/strong> (shaded in <strong>orange<\/strong>) due to the anticipated <strong>strong thunderstorms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These storms are forecast to unleash <strong>damaging wind gusts<\/strong> reaching <strong>60\u201375+ mph (96\u2013120+ km\/h)<\/strong> and <strong>large hail<\/strong> measuring <strong>1\u20132+ inches (2.5\u20135+ cm)<\/strong> in diameter. There&#8217;s also a <strong>risk for isolated tornadoes<\/strong>, with the <strong>highest probability<\/strong> concentrated in the <strong>Enhanced Risk areas<\/strong> across <strong>north-central Montana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Timing and regional storm progression<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>initial wave of showers and storms<\/strong> is expected to <strong>develop over western and southwestern Montana<\/strong> during the <strong>morning and early afternoon<\/strong>. These cells will progressively <strong>track east-northeast<\/strong> throughout the day, targeting a broad stretch of terrain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.<\/strong>, the most intense weather is expected to hit <strong>western parts of north-central Montana<\/strong>, including the <strong>Rocky Mountain Front<\/strong>, <strong>Cut Bank<\/strong>, and <strong>Great Falls<\/strong>, as well as the <strong>Helena area<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Moving into the <strong>afternoon and early evening<\/strong>\u2014from around <strong>1 p.m. to 7 p.m.<\/strong>\u2014the focus shifts toward <strong>central north-central areas<\/strong> like <strong>Havre<\/strong> and <strong>Lewistown<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the day, from roughly <strong>4 p.m. to 10 p.m.<\/strong>, storms are forecast to impact <strong>northeastern Montana<\/strong>, including <strong>Malta<\/strong> and <strong>Glasgow<\/strong>. <strong>Timing may vary slightly<\/strong>, depending on storm development speed and atmospheric instability.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Hazard outlook: what\u2019s most dangerous<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>main concerns<\/strong> for today\u2019s event are <strong>intense straight-line winds<\/strong> and <strong>very large hail<\/strong>, both capable of causing <strong>widespread damage<\/strong>. The <strong>risk of tornadoes<\/strong>, though less frequent, is <strong>not negligible<\/strong>\u2014particularly for residents and travelers within the <strong>orange Enhanced Risk zone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Conditions are ripe for <strong>explosive thunderstorm development<\/strong>, with <strong>instability and wind shear levels<\/strong> both supporting <strong>supercell formation<\/strong>.
