According to the <strong>National Weather Service (NWS)<\/strong> and the <strong>Storm Prediction Center (SPC)<\/strong>, conditions are in place for <strong>damaging hail, heavy rain<\/strong>, and <strong>wind gusts reaching 60 to 70 mph (96 to 112 km\/h)<\/strong> across <strong>hundreds of thousands of square miles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Storm targets: from the Southern Plains to the Mid-Atlantic<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>forecast map from the SPC<\/strong> shows a <strong>broad area of concern<\/strong>. The threat includes <strong>central and southeast Texas<\/strong>, <strong>eastern New Mexico<\/strong>, <strong>Colorado<\/strong>, <strong>Wyoming<\/strong>, and <strong>western Nebraska<\/strong>. Farther north, <strong>South Dakota<\/strong> and <strong>Minnesota<\/strong> are also in the zone of concern.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Louisiana<\/strong>, <strong>Arkansas<\/strong>, <strong>Mississippi<\/strong>, and <strong>Missouri<\/strong> face <strong>localized severe weather<\/strong>, while storm risks also extend into <strong>Georgia<\/strong>, <strong>Tennessee<\/strong>, the <strong>Carolinas<\/strong>, and parts of the <strong>Mid-Atlantic<\/strong>, including <strong>New York<\/strong>, <strong>New Jersey<\/strong>, and <strong>Pennsylvania<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Several <strong>major cities<\/strong>, such as <strong>New York City<\/strong>, <strong>Houston<\/strong>, <strong>Memphis<\/strong>, and <strong>Denver<\/strong>, are within or near <strong>zones of elevated risk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Main threats: wind, hail and flash flooding<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>AccuWeather meteorologist Alex DaSilva<\/strong> highlighted that while the <strong>overall risk is low<\/strong>, the <strong>geographic extent is unusually wide<\/strong>. Severe weather today may produce <strong>hail<\/strong>, <strong>flash flooding<\/strong>, and <strong>localized damaging winds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>NWS bulletin<\/strong> warns that <strong>scattered strong to severe thunderstorms<\/strong> may develop this afternoon and evening, especially in the <strong>Great Plains<\/strong>, <strong>Texas coastal plains<\/strong>, and <strong>Upper Midwest<\/strong>. Rainfall totals in these regions may cause <strong>urban and small-stream flooding<\/strong>, especially where storms <strong>repeat over the same areas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>NWS in Houston<\/strong> reports that <strong>storm activity is already ongoing<\/strong> this morning, with <strong>frequent lightning<\/strong>, <strong>torrential rain<\/strong>, and <strong>gusty winds<\/strong> topping <strong>40 mph (64 km\/h)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Localized threats intensify in Nebraska and the Mississippi Valley<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the <strong>northwest Sandhills of Nebraska<\/strong>, the <strong>NWS in North Platte<\/strong> has issued a <strong>Slight Risk warning (Level 2 of 5)<\/strong>. Further east across <strong>north-central Nebraska<\/strong>, the <strong>Marginal Risk zone (Level 1)<\/strong> also remains active.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <strong>southern Plains<\/strong> and the <strong>lower Mississippi River Valley<\/strong> are bracing for <strong>excessive rainfall<\/strong> and <strong>potential flooding<\/strong> that could extend through <strong>Friday night<\/strong>, according to the latest updates from <strong>NWS national headquarters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The ongoing pattern highlights the potential for <strong>isolated river flooding<\/strong> and dangerous <strong>urban flash flooding<\/strong> in parts of <strong>Arkansas<\/strong>, <strong>Louisiana<\/strong>, <strong>Mississippi<\/strong>, and adjacent states.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Key takeaways for Friday, June 13<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The SPC\u2019s forecast points to <strong>a dynamic and far-reaching thunderstorm event<\/strong>, covering more than <strong>250,000 square miles<\/strong>.
