The National Weather Service<\/strong> has issued the state\u2019s first-ever heat advisory<\/strong> for Sunday, June 15<\/strong>, with temperatures forecast to reach 85\u00b0F (29.4\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n While that\u2019s well below the all-time record for the date \u2014 96\u00b0F (35.5\u00b0C)<\/strong>, set in 1969<\/strong> \u2014 the advisory is significant because it reflects a new way of communicating weather risks in the state. Until this month, forecasters in Alaska<\/strong> used general \u201cspecial weather statements\u201d for heat events. Now, for the first time, the agency is using the more specific term \u201cheat advisory\u201d<\/strong> to provide clearer messaging.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n New alert language reflects shifting climate patterns<\/strong><\/p>\n Meteorologist Ciara Santiago<\/strong>, with the Fairbanks Weather Service Office<\/strong>, explained that the change was made to more effectively communicate the seriousness of heat events. \u201cIn Alaska, heat hits harder because most homes and buildings don\u2019t have air-conditioning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n The spike in temperatures is being driven by a ridge of high pressure<\/strong> building across central Alaska<\/strong>, sending conditions more typical of Texas<\/strong> \u2014 where Santiago grew up \u2014 into an area known more for permafrost than heat waves.
