Hurricane Erick<\/strong> has rapidly intensified into the first major hurricane<\/strong> of the 2025 season as it closes in on the southern coast of Mexico<\/strong>, threatening the region with flooding rains<\/strong>, damaging winds<\/strong>, and a life-threatening storm surge<\/strong>. As of Thursday morning<\/strong>, Erick<\/strong> has reached Category 4<\/strong> strength on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale<\/strong>, with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (210 km\/h)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Following the short-lived Tropical Storm Dalila<\/strong>, Erick<\/strong> formed early Tuesday<\/strong> in the eastern Pacific<\/strong>, quickly escalating from a tropical storm<\/strong> to a Category 2 hurricane<\/strong> in less than 24 hours. By noon Tuesday<\/strong>, wind speeds had jumped from 50 mph (80 km\/h)<\/strong> to 100 mph (160 km\/h)<\/strong>, easily qualifying as rapid intensification<\/strong>\u2014a rise of at least 35 mph (56 km\/h)<\/strong> in a single day.<\/p>\n According to AccuWeather meteorologists<\/strong>, the storm has continued strengthening as expected, making Erick<\/strong> not only the second hurricane<\/strong> but also the earliest fifth-named storm<\/strong> in the eastern Pacific since July 9, 1956<\/strong>. The average date<\/strong> for a fifth-named storm in this basin is July 23<\/strong>, showing just how active this season has already become.<\/p>\n Hurricane Erick<\/strong> is currently tracking dangerously close to Acapulco<\/strong>, and its outer bands are already affecting large parts of southwestern Mexico<\/strong>. According to AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva<\/strong>, the region should expect “powerful wind gusts<\/strong>, power outages<\/strong>, torrential rainfall<\/strong>, flash flooding<\/strong>, and storm surge inundation<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n While the storm\u2019s center may pass slightly southeast of Acapulco<\/strong>, significant impacts<\/strong> are likely along a wide stretch<\/strong> of the southern Mexican coast<\/strong>. The AccuWeather RealImpact\u2122 Scale<\/strong> currently rates Erick<\/strong> as a Level 3<\/strong> hurricane, although this could increase depending on its exact track and continued strengthening.<\/p>\n As Erick<\/strong> pushes inland, moisture-rich bands<\/strong> will dump 8 to 16 inches (200 to 400 mm)<\/strong> of rain over coastal and mountainous areas<\/strong> of southern and southwestern Mexico<\/strong>, with an AccuWeather Local StormMax\u2122<\/strong> of 20 inches (500 mm)<\/strong> in isolated areas. This volume of rainfall over rugged terrain creates a serious risk of mudslides<\/strong>, especially in rural and elevated areas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Gusty winds<\/strong> have already been reported far from the center, as the storm pushes warm, moisture-laden air<\/strong> onshore. Coastal regions<\/strong> can expect large ocean swells<\/strong>, high surf<\/strong>, beach erosion<\/strong>, and dangerous rip currents<\/strong>. Near landfall, a storm surge<\/strong> of 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3 meters)<\/strong> is forecast, particularly east<\/strong> of the storm’s eye.<\/p>\n With five named tropical storms<\/strong> and now two hurricanes<\/strong> already recorded, the 2025 eastern Pacific season<\/strong> is running well ahead of schedule<\/strong>. The first hurricane<\/strong> typically forms around June 26<\/strong>, and the second hurricane<\/strong> usually doesn\u2019t appear until mid-July<\/strong>. The previous storm, Barbara<\/strong>, briefly became a Category 1 hurricane<\/strong> on June 8<\/strong> with sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km\/h)<\/strong>\u2014a figure now dwarfed by Erick\u2019s intensity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Forecasts suggest that 14 to 18 tropical storms<\/strong> could form in this basin during the season, with seven to ten<\/strong> potentially becoming hurricanes. Of those, three to six<\/strong> may impact Mexico<\/strong> and Central America<\/strong> directly.<\/p>\n Meteorologists are watching for yet another tropical rainstorm<\/strong> to form off the coast of Central America<\/strong> between June 24 and 27<\/strong>. At the same time, a weaker tropical environment<\/strong> continues in the Atlantic basin<\/strong>, hindered by dry air<\/strong>, Saharan dust<\/strong>, and high wind shear<\/strong>\u2014conditions typical for early summer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Still, some eyes remain on the southwestern Gulf of Mexico<\/strong> and the western Caribbean<\/strong>, where localized thunderstorms and brief tropical developments remain possible.
