A scorching dome of heat targets Southeast Michigan<\/strong><\/p>\n A severe heat wave<\/strong> is about to grip the southern half of Lower Michigan<\/strong>, marking what could be the most intense stretch of hot weather<\/strong> the state has experienced since 2012<\/strong>. While Northern Michigan<\/strong> will be largely spared from the brunt of the heat, the southeast<\/strong> corner\u2014including Detroit<\/strong>, Ann Arbor<\/strong>, and Monroe<\/strong>\u2014is about to feel the full force<\/strong> of a classic hot dome<\/strong> formation in the upper atmosphere.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Beginning Saturday, June 21<\/strong>, and lasting through Thursday, June 26<\/strong>, the upper-air pattern<\/strong> will trap a large mass of scalding air<\/strong> over the Midwest<\/strong>, with the core of the heat dome<\/strong> centered over Kentucky<\/strong> and West Virginia<\/strong>, but extending fully into Southeast Michigan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Detroit<\/strong> and nearby areas may flirt with 100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014something that hasn’t happened in more than a decade. If those readings are reached, they would mark the highest temperatures recorded<\/strong> in the region since the summer of 2012<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Unlike recent hot spells that have sometimes approached from the northwest<\/strong>, this episode will push in from the southeast<\/strong>, heating up the urban pavement corridors<\/strong> of Metro Detroit<\/strong> with remarkable intensity. The urban heat island effect<\/strong> will amplify daytime highs, particularly in concrete-heavy zones<\/strong>, possibly pushing readings 2 to 4 degrees higher<\/strong> than surrounding rural areas.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Monday, June 23<\/strong>, is expected to be the peak of this hot stretch<\/strong>, with widespread highs in Southeast Michigan<\/strong> climbing to between 96\u00b0F and 100\u00b0F (36\u00b0C to 38\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Highs will stay in the 90s (32\u00b0C+)<\/strong> for much of the week across the southern counties<\/strong> of the Lower Peninsula<\/strong>, with some areas logging five to six consecutive days<\/strong> above the 90\u00b0F (32\u00b0C)<\/strong> threshold.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In contrast, Northern Michigan<\/strong>, including cities like Traverse City<\/strong>, will likely see only one or two days<\/strong> above 90\u00b0F (32\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014primarily between Sunday and Wednesday<\/strong>\u2014with temperatures generally retreating by the end of next week.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n By Thursday, June 26<\/strong>, models suggest a slight cooling trend<\/strong> could begin to break down the heat dome.
