This atmospheric phenomenon<\/strong> is expected to intensify<\/strong> over the coming days, bringing oppressive heat and dangerous humidity levels<\/strong> through at least Wednesday, June 25<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The term \u2018heat dome\u2019<\/strong> refers to a large, slow-moving ridge of high pressure<\/strong> that effectively traps heat<\/strong> near the surface. As the air sinks, it compresses and warms<\/strong>, resulting in hot, dry conditions<\/strong>.
