All of New Jersey under a severe thunderstorm watch through Thursday evening<\/strong><\/p>\n As of this afternoon, Thursday, June 19<\/strong>, a severe thunderstorm watch<\/strong> has been posted for every county in New Jersey<\/strong>, stretching through 9 p.m. tonight<\/strong>, as intense storm cells<\/strong> continue to develop and move across the Mid-Atlantic<\/strong>. This watch also extends to New York City<\/strong>, parts of the Hudson Valley<\/strong>, eastern Pennsylvania<\/strong>, and eastern Maryland<\/strong>, including the Philadelphia metro area<\/strong> and the entire state of Delaware<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Issued by the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center<\/strong>, this watch means atmospheric conditions<\/strong> are favorable<\/strong> for the development of dangerous thunderstorms<\/strong>, capable of producing damaging wind gusts<\/strong> up to 60 mph (96 km\/h)<\/strong> or more, large hail<\/strong>, and frequent lightning<\/strong>. Forecasters also warn of a possible tornado<\/strong>, due to elevated wind shear<\/strong> combined with intense surface heating and humidity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The first watch<\/strong>, issued at 1:25 p.m.<\/strong>, covers Bergen<\/strong>, Essex<\/strong>, Hudson<\/strong>, Passaic<\/strong>, and Union counties<\/strong> in North Jersey<\/strong>, as well as New York City<\/strong> and parts of northeastern Pennsylvania<\/strong>. A second alert<\/strong>, issued at 1:45 p.m.<\/strong>, includes 16 additional counties<\/strong> across Central<\/strong> and South Jersey<\/strong>, including Atlantic<\/strong>, Burlington<\/strong>, Camden<\/strong>, Cape May<\/strong>, Cumberland<\/strong>, Gloucester<\/strong>, Hunterdon<\/strong>, Mercer<\/strong>, Middlesex<\/strong>, Monmouth<\/strong>, Morris<\/strong>, Ocean<\/strong>, Salem<\/strong>, Somerset<\/strong>, Sussex<\/strong>, and Warren<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This expanded threat zone<\/strong> reflects the growing instability<\/strong> in the region’s atmosphere<\/strong>, fueled by temperatures in the low 90s\u00b0F (32-34\u00b0C)<\/strong> and mostly sunny skies<\/strong>. The Storm Prediction Center<\/strong> has elevated New Jersey\u2019s risk level<\/strong> to enhanced<\/strong>\u2014the third highest<\/strong> on their five-point scale<\/strong>\u2014signaling a heightened potential for severe weather<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Around 1:15 p.m.<\/strong>, isolated storm cells<\/strong> began pushing into eastern Pennsylvania<\/strong> and northern New Jersey<\/strong>. The National Weather Service<\/strong> tracked a strong, fast-moving system over eastern Essex<\/strong> and eastern Hudson counties<\/strong>, producing 30 mph (48 km\/h)<\/strong> gusts. While not yet classified as severe<\/strong>, these initial cells are expected to intensify<\/strong> and become more organized<\/strong> later this afternoon and evening.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Mount Holly forecast office<\/strong> continues to monitor conditions across the Philadelphia region<\/strong>, as well as central<\/strong> and southern New Jersey<\/strong>, where storm development could become more widespread and potentially dangerous<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n So far this year, New Jersey<\/strong> has experienced one confirmed tornado<\/strong>, which occurred on May 16<\/strong>. That twister<\/strong>\u2014with top winds estimated at 90 to 95 mph (145\u2013153 km\/h)<\/strong>\u2014touched down in the Williamstown<\/strong> area of Monroe Township<\/strong>, Gloucester County<\/strong>, before moving into Atlantic County<\/strong>. The 300-yard-wide funnel<\/strong> remained on the ground for over 8 miles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n That same storm system also spawned a rare gustnado<\/strong> in Franklinville<\/strong>, within Franklin Township<\/strong>, also in Gloucester County<\/strong>. While not classified as a tornado<\/strong>, a gustnado<\/strong> is a brief, shallow whirlwind<\/strong> formed along the leading edge of thunderstorm outflows<\/strong>, with no connection to cloud-base rotation.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The regional radar<\/strong> continues to show escalating activity<\/strong>, with storm development ramping up along the interior Northeast<\/strong> and across the Garden State<\/strong>.
