Weather and school safety intersect this week in New York<\/strong>, as state officials<\/strong> ramp up efforts to protect students and teachers<\/strong> from intensifying summer heat<\/strong>. With hot and humid weather<\/strong> forecast for the upcoming days<\/strong>, a new state law<\/strong> is gaining attention\u2014one that could reshape how schools<\/strong> across New York State<\/strong> respond to extreme temperatures inside their buildings.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n State Senator James Skoufis<\/strong>, representing the Hudson Valley<\/strong>, emphasized that this has been a longstanding priority<\/strong>. \u201cI\u2019ve been pushing for climate-controlled classrooms<\/strong> for more than seven years<\/strong>,\u201d he said. Now, following Governor Kathy Hochul’s<\/strong> decision in December<\/strong> to sign a law mandating temperature regulation<\/strong> in schools, change is finally on the horizon.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The new legislation sets a maximum classroom temperature<\/strong> of 88\u00b0F (31\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Once indoor temperatures climb above 82\u00b0F (28\u00b0C)<\/strong>, schools are required to act immediately<\/strong> to prevent health risks. That action could involve bringing in fans<\/strong>, activating air conditioning<\/strong>, closing blinds<\/strong>, or turning off lights<\/strong>\u2014any measure that helps lower the temperature<\/strong> or limit sun exposure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Skoufis shared a personal reflection from his school days in Orange County<\/strong>: \u201cBack then, only one building<\/strong>\u2014the high school\u2014had air conditioning<\/strong>. Twenty years later<\/strong>, that\u2019s still the only one<\/strong>. That\u2019s unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In Cornwall<\/strong>, Lisa Piore<\/strong>, a school nurse<\/strong> at Cornwall Elementary School<\/strong>, underscored the health risks for children. \u201cTheir little bodies can’t take extreme heat<\/strong>,\u201d she explained. \u201cWhen it gets very hot, we follow protocol.
