New York, Sunday, June 23, 2025 \u2014 8:00 p.m. EDT<\/strong><\/p>\n The aurora borealis<\/strong>\u2014also known as the northern lights<\/strong>\u2014could once again illuminate the night skies<\/strong> across parts of the northern United States<\/strong> tonight, although the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)<\/strong> warns that the phenomenon will be confined to select northern states<\/strong> near the Canadian border<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Although no major geomagnetic storms<\/strong> or intense solar wind bursts<\/strong> are forecast to reach Earth\u2019s magnetic field<\/strong> this evening, NOAA<\/strong> projects a Kp index<\/strong> peaking at 3 on a 0\u20139 scale<\/strong>, which is still sufficient to produce faint auroras<\/strong> under dark skies in northern latitudes.<\/p>\n Skywatchers<\/strong> in eight U.S. states<\/strong> have a chance to catch a glimpse of the northern lights<\/strong>, especially in regions closer to the Canadian border<\/strong>. According to the latest forecast, the aurora<\/strong> could be visible in northern parts of Washington<\/strong>, Idaho<\/strong>, Montana<\/strong>, Minnesota<\/strong>, Wisconsin<\/strong>, and Michigan<\/strong>, as well as across much of North Dakota<\/strong> and most of Alaska<\/strong>. Meanwhile, much of Canada<\/strong> is also likely to experience enhanced visibility conditions.<\/p>\n NOAA<\/strong> recommends looking skyward between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. local time<\/strong>, when geomagnetic activity is typically strongest<\/strong> and sky darkness<\/strong> at its peak. Observers should move far from urban lights<\/strong> and seek locations with minimal atmospheric haze<\/strong>. However, due to extended daylight<\/strong> around the June solstice<\/strong>, conditions for viewing from high northern latitudes<\/strong>\u2014such as in Alaska<\/strong>\u2014may be more challenging<\/strong>.<\/p>\n There is a slight possibility<\/strong> of minor solar radiation events<\/strong> or radio blackouts<\/strong>, though forecasters confirm<\/strong> no such incidents were observed in the past 24 hours. The current auroral activity<\/strong> is relatively calm<\/strong> compared to the intense Gannon Storm<\/strong> of May 2024<\/strong>, which pushed the aurora<\/strong> as far south as Florida<\/strong>, after powerful coronal mass ejections<\/strong> erupted from a sunspot cluster<\/strong> on the solar surface<\/strong>.<\/p>\n While DSLR cameras<\/strong> remain the gold standard for astrophotography, modern smartphones<\/strong> are increasingly capable of capturing the subtle greens and purples<\/strong> of the aurora<\/strong>. Experts suggest using a wide-angle lens<\/strong>, setting exposure manually, and\u2014most importantly\u2014using a tripod<\/strong> to keep the camera perfectly steady<\/strong> during long-exposure shots.
