Southern Michigan<\/strong> is currently in the grip of intense heat<\/strong>, with temperatures soaring<\/strong> well above average for late June 2025<\/strong>. This unseasonable heat wave<\/strong> has sparked questions about whether extreme temperatures<\/strong> will dominate the rest of summer<\/strong> in the Great Lakes State<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The latest long-range forecast<\/strong>, released on June 19<\/strong> by NOAA\u2019s Climate Prediction Center<\/strong>, suggests a moderate likelihood<\/strong> of above-normal temperatures<\/strong> in Michigan<\/strong> from July<\/strong> through September<\/strong>. While this doesn’t guarantee record-breaking heat, it does mean that daily highs<\/strong> will more often reach into the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit<\/strong> (around 29\u00b0C to 34\u00b0C<\/strong>), especially across southern areas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In fact, if the current hot stretch in late June<\/strong> is any indication, it sets the stage for more frequent hot spells<\/strong> in July<\/strong>. But unlike the persistent heat we\u2019re experiencing now, the models do not currently predict a return of extreme heat<\/strong> until possibly mid-July or later<\/strong>. Until then, expect a mix of warm summer days<\/strong>, with occasional spikes near 90\u00b0F (32\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Historically, average high temperatures<\/strong> in July and August<\/strong> across Michigan<\/strong> range from 80\u00b0F (27\u00b0C)<\/strong> in the north<\/strong> to about 83\u00b0F (28\u00b0C)<\/strong> in the south<\/strong>. By late September<\/strong>, highs typically drop into the 70s (21\u00b0C\u201326\u00b0C)<\/strong>. A forecast trend toward warmer-than-average<\/strong> temperatures implies frequent highs in the mid to upper 80s (29\u00b0C\u201331\u00b0C)<\/strong>, and periods of low 90s (32\u00b0C\u201334\u00b0C)<\/strong> aren\u2019t out of the question.<\/p>\n As for precipitation<\/strong>, there\u2019s no clear indication of any strong trend across Michigan<\/strong> from July to September<\/strong>. The long-range outlook<\/strong> does not predict either significantly wetter<\/strong> or drier-than-normal<\/strong> conditions. This usually translates into a typical summer mix<\/strong> of dry stretches<\/strong> and localized thunderstorms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Interestingly, the forecast does suggest drier-than-normal weather<\/strong> just to the west<\/strong> of Michigan<\/strong>, while the southeast U.S.<\/strong> is expected to be wetter than average<\/strong>. For Michigan<\/strong>, this neutral outlook doesn’t exclude the chance for isolated heavy rain events<\/strong>, especially when hot, humid air masses<\/strong> move in from the south<\/strong>.<\/p>\n A recent example occurred just this past Saturday morning<\/strong>, when a cluster of thunderstorms<\/strong> dumped over 4 inches of rain<\/strong> in some areas\u2014illustrating how localized downpours<\/strong> can still break out even in an otherwise quiet pattern<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Importantly, there\u2019s no sign of returning to the cool, cloudy, and soggy weather<\/strong> that dominated much of May<\/strong>.
