An intense heat wave<\/strong> is set to take hold of Oklahoma<\/strong> and much of the Central and Eastern United States<\/strong> this week, with temperatures surging well into the triple digits<\/strong>. The National Weather Service offices in Tulsa and Norman<\/strong> have issued a heat advisory<\/strong>, describing the current weather pattern as \u201cextremely dangerous\u201d<\/strong> due to its potential to trigger widespread heat-related illnesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

Triple-digit highs forecast through the weekend<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Temperatures<\/strong> are expected to climb rapidly starting today<\/strong>, reaching above 100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong> by midweek. Saturday and Sunday<\/strong> could see peaks of up to 103\u00b0F (39.4\u00b0C)<\/strong> in multiple areas, with urban centers like Tulsa and Oklahoma City<\/strong> especially at risk due to urban heat island effects<\/strong>. These cities, filled with asphalt and concrete<\/strong>, trap heat and lack the natural cooling that tree cover provides.<\/p>\n

According to the National Weather Service<\/strong>, extreme heat<\/strong> is the leading cause of weather-related fatalities<\/strong> in the United States<\/strong>. The prolonged exposure forecast this week is expected to be especially hard on children<\/strong>, older adults<\/strong>, and people with pre-existing health conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Hydration and cooling support in Oklahoma City and Tulsa<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In response, Tulsa<\/strong> and Oklahoma City<\/strong> have activated cooling centers<\/strong> to help residents escape the oppressive conditions.
