Extreme heat continues in Chicago on Monday, June 23<\/strong><\/p>\n CHICAGO, Illinois<\/strong> \u2014 A dangerous heat wave<\/strong> remains firmly in place across the Chicago metropolitan area<\/strong> for the third consecutive day<\/strong> this Monday, June 23<\/strong>, with feels-like temperatures<\/strong> soaring up to 105\u00b0F (40.5\u00b0C)<\/strong> and an extreme heat warning<\/strong> extended across much of Illinois<\/strong> through midnight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n According to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman<\/strong>, a shift in the weather pattern<\/strong> is expected to arrive overnight<\/strong>, bringing daily chances of thunderstorms<\/strong> and gradually cooler conditions<\/strong>, although the heat<\/strong> will persist for a few more days.<\/p>\n Until the pattern change<\/strong> arrives, heat alerts<\/strong> remain in full force. The National Weather Service (NWS)<\/strong> has kept Chicago<\/strong> and all of Cook County<\/strong> under an extreme heat warning<\/strong>, with humid and oppressive air masses<\/strong> pushing actual temperatures up to 97\u00b0F (36.1\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Heat worsens overnight in urban core<\/strong><\/p>\n While daytime highs remain scorching, the heat risk<\/strong> is particularly acute during the overnight hours<\/strong> due to the Urban Heat Island effect<\/strong>, especially in the central districts of Chicago<\/strong>. Temperatures may not drop below 80\u00b0F (26.6\u00b0C)<\/strong> again tonight, which is higher than the normal daytime highs<\/strong> for late June<\/strong> in northern Illinois<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n According to the NWS<\/strong>, this persistent nighttime warmth<\/strong> limits the body’s ability to recover from daytime heat<\/strong>, making conditions especially hazardous<\/strong> for seniors<\/strong> and individuals with pre-existing health issues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Urban areas<\/strong> like downtown Chicago<\/strong> remain several degrees warmer than the surrounding suburbs and rural regions<\/strong>, as concrete and asphalt<\/strong> radiate the heat they absorbed during the day well into the night.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Relief coming with scattered storms and rain<\/strong><\/p>\n By late Monday night<\/strong>, the Chicago area<\/strong> will begin to see the first signs of change<\/strong>, as unstable air<\/strong> introduces a chance for scattered showers<\/strong> and isolated thunderstorms<\/strong> moving in from the northwest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Tuesday, June 24<\/strong>, is forecast to begin mostly dry<\/strong>, but by midday<\/strong>, showers<\/strong> and storms<\/strong> are expected to form, particularly in counties north and west of Chicago<\/strong>.
