New York, Monday, June 24, 2025 \u2013<\/strong> Tens of thousands of residents across the Midwest<\/strong> and the East Coast<\/strong>\u2014particularly in New York<\/strong>, Pennsylvania<\/strong> and Ohio<\/strong>\u2014are without electricity as this season\u2019s first major heat wave<\/strong> intensifies. The crisis is especially severe in northeastern urban areas<\/strong>, where power grids<\/strong> are under extreme strain and utility companies<\/strong> are racing to restore services.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

Power grid under pressure in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As of early Monday afternoon, FirstEnergy<\/strong>, a utility provider based in Ohio<\/strong>, reported nearly 50,000 outages<\/strong> in the northeastern part of the state<\/strong>, with more than 13,000 homes and businesses in Cleveland<\/strong> affected.<\/p>\n

In Philadelphia<\/strong>, provider PECO<\/strong> said it is working to restore electricity to almost 6,000 customers<\/strong>, with some areas still feeling the effects of straight-line winds<\/strong> that exceeded 70 mph<\/strong> last Thursday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In New York City<\/strong>, ConEdison<\/strong> announced over 14,000 households<\/strong> experiencing either partial or complete outages as of Monday. Crews are working under pressure, particularly in Queens<\/strong>, where voltage has been deliberately reduced by 8%<\/strong> to preserve system stability. The company has urged residents to conserve electricity<\/strong>, warning that equipment failures<\/strong> could trigger further disruptions.<\/p>\n

New York declares emergency as conditions worsen<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On Sunday<\/strong>, Governor Kathy Hochul<\/strong> declared a state of emergency<\/strong> across 32 counties<\/strong>, including heavily affected boroughs like Queens<\/strong>, following forecasts of dangerously high temperatures<\/strong> and severe thunderstorms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Brooklyn<\/strong> and Staten Island<\/strong> have also been impacted, with ConEdison describing most of the current outages as \u201cweather-related<\/strong>.\u201d The company\u2019s live outage map<\/strong> showed several areas where crews are actively working to bring systems back online.<\/p>\n

Residents have been asked to limit use of air conditioning<\/strong>, avoid charging electric vehicles<\/strong>, and prepare for temporary loss of service. Meanwhile, in Akron, Ohio<\/strong>, officials warned of rotating blackouts<\/strong> lasting up to 12 hours<\/strong>, with 90-minute cycles of power outages due to high demand.<\/p>\n

Record-breaking temperatures grip the Northeast<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This week’s heat wave<\/strong> is scorching large swaths of the Midwest<\/strong> and spreading rapidly across the Northeast<\/strong>, with cities like New York<\/strong>, Philadelphia<\/strong> and Washington, D.C.<\/strong> expected to reach temperatures above 100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Over 148 million people<\/strong> across the central and eastern U.S.<\/strong> are under heat alerts<\/strong>, and around 75 million residents<\/strong> in cities including Chicago<\/strong>, Boston<\/strong>, Detroit<\/strong>, Pittsburgh<\/strong> and Baltimore<\/strong> remain at risk, according to emergency forecasts.<\/p>\n

On Saturday<\/strong>, parts of Iowa<\/strong>, Minnesota<\/strong>, Nebraska<\/strong> and South Dakota<\/strong> recorded highs near 100\u00b0F (37.7\u00b0C)<\/strong>, with the heat dome<\/strong> shifting steadily eastward, bringing suffocating humidity<\/strong> and pushing electricity infrastructure<\/strong> beyond capacity.<\/p>\n
