Tuesday, June 24, 2025 \u2013 New York, 10:00 AM (EDT)<\/strong> \u2014 The Northern Lights<\/strong> are returning to the continental United States<\/strong> tonight, with a renewed forecast from NOAA<\/strong> (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/strong>) indicating a heightened chance of aurora sightings in 14 U.S. states<\/strong>. A minor geomagnetic storm<\/strong>\u2014rated G2<\/strong> on a five-level scale\u2014is expected to intensify after sunset on Tuesday, June 24<\/strong>, and into the early hours of Wednesday, June 25<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to NOAA\u2019s Space Weather Prediction Center<\/strong>, the Kp index<\/strong>\u2014a standard measurement of geomagnetic disturbance\u2014may reach level 5<\/strong>, enough to generate visible auroras<\/strong> on the northern horizon<\/strong> in several states far beyond the usual viewing zones.<\/p>\n

This celestial activity is linked to a large coronal hole<\/strong> on the Sun<\/strong>, which has turned to face Earth<\/strong> and is releasing a fast-moving stream of solar wind<\/strong>. As this wind collides with Earth\u2019s magnetic field<\/strong>, it can trigger auroras<\/strong> that glow in shades of green, purple and sometimes red.<\/p>\n

Which U.S. states have a chance to see the Northern Lights<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If skies remain clear and light pollution<\/strong> is minimal, residents in parts of Washington<\/strong>, northern Idaho<\/strong>, Montana<\/strong>, Wyoming<\/strong>, North Dakota<\/strong>, South Dakota<\/strong>, Minnesota<\/strong>, Wisconsin<\/strong>, Michigan<\/strong>, Iowa<\/strong>, New York<\/strong>, Vermont<\/strong>, New Hampshire<\/strong>, and Maine<\/strong> could witness the aurora borealis<\/strong> low on the northern horizon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Those closer to the U.S.\u2013Canada border<\/strong>\u2014particularly in rural areas<\/strong> and national parks<\/strong>\u2014will have the highest chance<\/strong> of spotting the display. Views may begin as early as 10:00 PM local time<\/strong>, depending on exact location and solar wind strength.<\/p>\n

While forecasts<\/strong> offer general predictions, real-time alerts<\/strong> will come from NASA\u2019s DSCOVR<\/strong> and ACE satellites<\/strong>, located nearly 1 million miles<\/strong> from Earth. These satellites monitor the solar wind\u2019s speed and magnetic orientation<\/strong>, offering about 30 minutes\u2019 warning<\/strong> before auroras ignite in the sky.<\/p>\n

To track the aurora’s progress tonight, you can use NOAA\u2019s 30-minute forecast tool<\/strong> or specialized aurora apps such as Glendale<\/strong>, which update in near real-time.<\/p>\n

What causes the Northern Lights to appear so far south<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Northern Lights<\/strong>, or aurora borealis<\/strong>, are created when charged particles<\/strong> from the Sun<\/strong> interact with oxygen<\/strong> and nitrogen atoms<\/strong> in Earth\u2019s upper atmosphere.
