Blackouts in New York as heatwave pushes temperatures past 100\u00b0F<\/strong><\/p>\n NEW YORK<\/strong>, Thursday, June 26, 2025<\/strong>, 8:30 AM local time \u2013 An unprecedented extreme heatwave<\/strong> is gripping the East Coast<\/strong>, and New York City<\/strong> is at the heart of the crisis: thousands of residents<\/strong> are left without power<\/strong> as temperatures continue to soar above 100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n More than 3,000 people<\/strong> across parts of Queens<\/strong>, Brooklyn<\/strong>, and Staten Island<\/strong> have been without electricity for a second day<\/strong>, according to PIX 11<\/strong>. Meanwhile, Con Edison<\/strong> has managed to restore power to over 34,000 households in the Bronx<\/strong>, but the pressure on the electrical grid<\/strong> remains critical<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This is a stark example of how extreme weather<\/strong> is overwhelming urban infrastructure<\/strong>, much of which dates back to the 1960s and 1970s<\/strong>. Large portions of the U.S. power grid<\/strong> are more than 50 years old<\/strong> and would require billions in investments<\/strong> to bring up to modern standards capable of withstanding today\u2019s climate challenges.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The heatwave is expected to peak<\/strong> in major Northeastern cities<\/strong> between today and tomorrow<\/strong>, according to meteorological forecasts. Experts are describing conditions as similar to being in an “air fryer<\/strong>” \u2014 a stifling combination<\/strong> of high heat<\/strong>, humidity<\/strong>, and little wind<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Ryan Maue<\/strong>, meteorologist and former chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/strong>, told NPR: “Like an air fryer, it’s going to be hot.”<\/strong> He added, “This is a three-day stretch of dangerous heat<\/strong> that will truly test the endurance<\/strong> of urban dwellers and those most vulnerable<\/strong> to oppressive heatwaves.”<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Other states are also issuing early warnings<\/strong>: utilities in North Carolina<\/strong> are urging residents to conserve electricity<\/strong> in case of grid overload, while Maine<\/strong> is bracing for potential peak load issues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Adding further strain to the system is the surging energy demand from AI data centers<\/strong>.
