But is it the <em>hottest<\/em> it has ever been in <strong>Kentucky<\/strong>? Not even close \u2014 and that might come as a surprise to anyone currently sweating through this <strong>sweltering stretch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>large heat dome<\/strong> continues to expand across much of the <strong>United States<\/strong>, pushing <strong>heat index values<\/strong> in <strong>Kentucky<\/strong> well past <strong>105\u00b0F (40.5\u00b0C)<\/strong>. According to the <strong>National Weather Service in Louisville<\/strong>, the <strong>air<\/strong> is so humid that it feels <em>even warmer<\/em> than the actual temperature.<\/p>\n<p>Despite scattered chances for <strong>afternoon storms<\/strong>, much of the <strong>Bluegrass State<\/strong> remains under a <strong>heat advisory<\/strong>, with meteorologists stressing the importance of staying indoors and <strong>hydrated<\/strong> as temperatures climb into the <strong>upper 90s Fahrenheit (above 35\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But just how hot can <strong>Kentucky<\/strong> get? Here&#8217;s a look at the <strong>most extreme weather records<\/strong> ever documented in the <strong>Commonwealth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Hottest day ever recorded in Kentucky<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>most blistering day<\/strong> on record in <strong>Kentucky<\/strong> occurred on <strong>July 28, 1930<\/strong>, in <strong>Greenburg<\/strong>, a town about <strong>82 miles south of Louisville<\/strong>. On that scorching Monday, thermometers registered a <strong>searing 114\u00b0F (45.5\u00b0C)<\/strong> \u2014 the <strong>hottest official temperature<\/strong> ever documented in the state, according to the <strong>National Weather Service<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That <strong>summer of 1930<\/strong> marked one of the <strong>most extreme heat waves<\/strong> in <strong>U.S. history<\/strong>, occurring during the early years of the <strong>Great Depression<\/strong>. With no relief from <strong>modern air conditioning<\/strong>, that day would\u2019ve been <em>unimaginably brutal<\/em> for residents.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>What about air conditioning in 1930s Kentucky?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Back then, <strong>air conditioning<\/strong> was still a <strong>luxury<\/strong> \u2014 or more accurately, a <strong>fantasy<\/strong> for most families. The first patent for a <strong>residential window air conditioner<\/strong> was filed in <strong>1931<\/strong>, but it wasn\u2019t until <strong>1932<\/strong> that these units became commercially available.<\/p>\n<p>Even then, they were priced between <strong>$10,000 and $50,000<\/strong> \u2014 roughly <strong>$236,000 to $1.2 million<\/strong> in <strong>2025 dollars<\/strong>. For most Kentuckians in the 1930s, <em>cooling off<\/em> meant sitting in the shade or sleeping on porches.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Hottest temperature ever in Louisville<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The city of <strong>Louisville<\/strong> has reached its peak heat of <strong>107\u00b0F (41.7\u00b0C)<\/strong> <strong>three times<\/strong> in its recorded history. These days occurred on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>July 14, 1936<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>July 28, 1930<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>July 24, 1901<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each of these days is etched into the city\u2019s <strong>meteorological history<\/strong> as a <strong>benchmark of extreme heat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Other weather extremes in Kentucky<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While <strong>heat<\/strong> often dominates the summer months, <strong>Kentucky<\/strong> has seen its share of <strong>other weather records<\/strong> that remain just as intense \u2014 if not more so \u2014 than the current stretch of hot days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Greatest 24-hour rainfall<\/strong>:<br \/>\nBoth <strong>Kentucky<\/strong> and <strong>Louisville<\/strong> experienced their <strong>wettest single day<\/strong> on <strong>March 1, 1997<\/strong>, with a remarkable <strong>10.48 inches (266.2 mm)<\/strong> of rain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Greatest 24-hour snowfall<\/strong>:<br \/>\nOn <strong>December 23, 2004<\/strong>, <strong>Lewisport<\/strong> saw <strong>20 inches (50.8 cm)<\/strong> of snow \u2014 the <strong>state\u2019s highest single-day total<\/strong>. <strong>Louisville\u2019s<\/strong> heaviest 24-hour snow was <strong>15.5 inches (39.4 cm)<\/strong> on <strong>January 17, 1994<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lowest minimum temperature<\/strong>:<br \/>\nThe <strong>coldest moment<\/strong> in <strong>Kentucky history<\/strong> came on <strong>January 19, 1994<\/strong>, when <strong>Shelbyville<\/strong> hit a staggering <strong>-37\u00b0F (-38.3\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Otherwise sunny and oppressive, with a high of <strong>96\u00b0F (35.5\u00b0C)<\/strong> and low of <strong>75\u00b0F (23.8\u00b0C)<\/strong>. <strong>Feels-like<\/strong> temps remain <strong>over 105\u00b0F<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday, June 26<\/strong>: Continued <strong>heat and humidity<\/strong>, with a <strong>chance of storms<\/strong> in the afternoon. High near <strong>94\u00b0F (34.4\u00b0C)<\/strong> and low around <strong>76\u00b0F (24.4\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friday, June 27<\/strong>: Expect <strong>sunshine<\/strong>, high heat, and a <strong>40% chance<\/strong> of afternoon storms. High of <strong>94\u00b0F (34.4\u00b0C)<\/strong> and low of <strong>75\u00b0F (23.8\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saturday, June 28<\/strong>: A <strong>60% chance<\/strong> of showers and possible thunderstorms by afternoon. High near <strong>93\u00b0F (33.8\u00b0C)<\/strong>, low near <strong>74\u00b0F (23.3\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunday, June 29<\/strong>: <strong>Thunderstorms likely<\/strong> under partly sunny skies.
