The high at Central Park<\/strong> reached 99\u00b0F (37.2\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014just shy of the predicted 100\u00b0F (37.8\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014yet still hot enough to break the previous June 24<\/strong> record of 96\u00b0F (35.5\u00b0C)<\/strong>, set back in 1888<\/strong>.<\/p>\n It was also the hottest temperature recorded in Central Park since July 18, 2012<\/strong>, when it actually hit 100\u00b0F (37.8\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Notably, it\u2019s been about four years<\/strong> since the city last saw 98\u00b0F (36.6\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n More than 150 million people<\/strong> across the Eastern U.S.<\/strong> woke up under heat warnings<\/strong>, and the National Weather Service<\/strong> expected dozens of locations to either tie or exceed their daily high temperature records.<\/p>\n Wednesday, June 26<\/strong> marks the last day<\/strong> of the current heatwave<\/strong>, with highs hovering near 95\u00b0F (35\u00b0C)<\/strong> across much of New York<\/strong>, New Jersey<\/strong>, and Connecticut<\/strong>. But a cold front<\/strong> arriving overnight will deliver a dramatic drop<\/strong> in temperatures.<\/p>\n By Thursday<\/strong> and into Friday<\/strong>, the thermometer is expected to slide below seasonal averages<\/strong>. In New York City<\/strong>, Friday\u2019s high could reach only 69\u00b0F (20.5\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014a sharp and welcome contrast to the stifling heat earlier this week.<\/p>\n As the heat dome<\/strong> weakens, instability<\/strong> will return to the atmosphere, bringing back afternoon showers and thunderstorms<\/strong>, especially as we move toward the weekend<\/strong>. Forecast models suggest a shift to a cooler, more unsettled pattern<\/strong>, replacing the recent run of dry, oppressive heat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Looking ahead to next week<\/strong>, temperatures will begin to climb again, but in a far more manageable range<\/strong>. Highs are expected to settle in the mid-80s\u00b0F (around 29\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014a noticeable and comfortable<\/strong> change from this week\u2019s extremes.<\/p>\n The extended forecast<\/strong> currently shows clear skies<\/strong> and mild temperatures<\/strong> for July 4<\/strong>, just ten days away\u2014ideal conditions to enjoy the Macy\u2019s Fireworks Spectacular<\/strong> along the East River<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Although relief is approaching, an Extreme Heat Warning<\/strong> remains in effect for parts of New Jersey<\/strong> through 8 p.m. today<\/strong>, Wednesday<\/strong>.
