With <strong>nearly 100 daily high records<\/strong> still at risk, <strong>officials<\/strong> and <strong>residents<\/strong> alike are grappling with widespread effects that go well beyond discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roads buckle, railways bend under the pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the heat intensified over the weekend, <strong>roadways buckled<\/strong> across <strong>South Dakota<\/strong>, <strong>Nebraska<\/strong>, <strong>Minnesota<\/strong>, and <strong>Iowa<\/strong>, with further pavement fractures reported along <strong>Interstate highways<\/strong> in <strong>New Jersey<\/strong>. On <strong>Monday<\/strong>, an <strong>Amtrak train<\/strong> was trapped in a <strong>Baltimore tunnel<\/strong> without air conditioning, while <strong>multiple rail lines<\/strong> imposed <strong>speed restrictions<\/strong> due to the threat of <strong>track warping<\/strong> and potential <strong>power failures<\/strong>. In many cases, <strong>trains were canceled outright<\/strong> because of the dangerous conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In New York City<\/strong>, <strong>subway platforms<\/strong> turned into <strong>suffocating saunas<\/strong>, with temperatures inside stations surpassing levels considered dangerous for prolonged exposure. <strong>Massachusetts<\/strong> also saw <strong>swing bridges<\/strong> fail to operate due to <strong>metal expansion<\/strong>, and in <strong>Chesapeake, Virginia<\/strong>, a <strong>drawbridge<\/strong> remained stuck in an open position, the result of what the <strong>local fire department<\/strong> called a <strong>heat-related malfunction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Health impacts mounting across states<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Heat waves are historically the <strong>deadliest weather events<\/strong> in the <strong>United States<\/strong>, and this one is already claiming a toll. In the <strong>St. Louis area<\/strong>, one woman died after reportedly spending <strong>three days without access to water or air conditioning<\/strong>. At two <strong>high school graduation ceremonies<\/strong> in <strong>Paterson, New Jersey<\/strong>, <strong>16 people were hospitalized<\/strong> and over <strong>150 others<\/strong> were evaluated for <strong>heat-related illnesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Washington, DC<\/strong>, a <strong>K-Pop concert<\/strong> on <strong>Monday night<\/strong> ended early due to a spike in <strong>medical emergencies linked to the heat<\/strong>, and the <strong>Washington Monument<\/strong> remained closed on <strong>Wednesday<\/strong>. In <strong>New Hampshire<\/strong>, <strong>young hikers<\/strong> required rescue after suffering <strong>heat-related injuries<\/strong>, while in <strong>Norfolk, Massachusetts<\/strong>, <strong>two firefighters<\/strong> were hospitalized from <strong>exhaustion<\/strong> while battling a blaze under <strong>record-setting temperatures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Even <strong>hospitals in New York City and Chicago<\/strong> faced challenges keeping <strong>air conditioning and power systems<\/strong> functional under intense demand. On <strong>Tuesday<\/strong>, <strong>Augusta, Maine<\/strong> reached <strong>100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong> \u2013 its <strong>hottest June temperature on record<\/strong>, tying the all-time high for the <strong>state capital<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boston<\/strong> soared to <strong>102\u00b0F (39\u00b0C)<\/strong>, its <strong>highest temperature ever recorded in June<\/strong>, tying for the <strong>third-hottest day in city history<\/strong>. <strong>Philadelphia<\/strong> saw <strong>101\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong> on Tuesday, the first <strong>triple-digit reading<\/strong> since <strong>2012<\/strong> and the earliest in the <strong>summer season<\/strong>. <strong>Providence, Rhode Island<\/strong>, also joined the record books with a new <strong>June high of 100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong>, while <strong>Newark, New Jersey<\/strong>, hit <strong>103\u00b0F (39\u00b0C)<\/strong>, matching its all-time June record.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Queens<\/strong>, both <strong>John F. Kennedy International Airport<\/strong> and <strong>LaGuardia Airport<\/strong> hit <strong>102\u00b0F (39\u00b0C)<\/strong> and <strong>101\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong> respectively \u2013 marking <strong>unprecedented highs<\/strong> for the month of <strong>June<\/strong>. Across much of the <strong>East Coast<\/strong>, Wednesday afternoon brought temperatures into the <strong>mid to upper 90s\u00b0F (35\u201337\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Climate change raises the stakes for extreme heat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meteorologists and climate scientists continue to underscore that <strong>heat waves<\/strong> like this one are becoming more <strong>frequent<\/strong>, <strong>intense<\/strong>, and <strong>prolonged<\/strong> due to <strong>global warming<\/strong>. According to an analysis by <strong>Climate Central<\/strong>, the <strong>Mid-Atlantic\u2019s<\/strong> record heat on <strong>Tuesday<\/strong> was at least <strong>five times more likely<\/strong> to occur in today\u2019s <strong>warmer climate<\/strong> compared to a world without <strong>fossil fuel emissions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is <strong>no uncertainty<\/strong> around the fact that <strong>climate change makes heatwaves more intense and more frequent<\/strong>,\u201d said <strong>climate scientist Fredi Otto<\/strong>, who leads <strong>World Weather Attribution<\/strong>, a global project investigating the links between <strong>climate change<\/strong> and <strong>extreme events<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bernadette Woods Placky<\/strong>, <strong>chief meteorologist<\/strong> at <strong>Climate Central<\/strong>, emphasized that although <strong>dangerous heat<\/strong> has always existed, the <strong>current intensity<\/strong> is unprecedented. \u201cIn our warming world,\u201d she explained, \u201cthat heat is <strong>pushing to new levels and extremes<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trend is becoming clearer as <strong>scientists examine extreme events<\/strong> more closely.
