On Tuesday<\/strong>, several regions experienced their hottest day in over a decade<\/strong>, with heat indices<\/strong> climbing well above 100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong> and little relief expected through the rest of the week.<\/p>\n

More than 125 million people<\/strong> remained under heat warnings and advisories<\/strong> as of Wednesday<\/strong>, as the high-pressure dome responsible for this extreme weather continues to trap oppressive heat<\/strong> over the Mid-Atlantic<\/strong> and Northeast<\/strong>. With nearly 100 daily high records<\/strong> still at risk, officials<\/strong> and residents<\/strong> alike are grappling with widespread effects that go well beyond discomfort.<\/p>\n

Roads buckle, railways bend under the pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the heat intensified over the weekend, roadways buckled<\/strong> across South Dakota<\/strong>, Nebraska<\/strong>, Minnesota<\/strong>, and Iowa<\/strong>, with further pavement fractures reported along Interstate highways<\/strong> in New Jersey<\/strong>. On Monday<\/strong>, an Amtrak train<\/strong> was trapped in a Baltimore tunnel<\/strong> without air conditioning, while multiple rail lines<\/strong> imposed speed restrictions<\/strong> due to the threat of track warping<\/strong> and potential power failures<\/strong>. In many cases, trains were canceled outright<\/strong> because of the dangerous conditions.<\/p>\n

In New York City<\/strong>, subway platforms<\/strong> turned into suffocating saunas<\/strong>, with temperatures inside stations surpassing levels considered dangerous for prolonged exposure. Heat waves are historically the deadliest weather events<\/strong> in the United States<\/strong>, and this one is already claiming a toll. In the St. Louis area<\/strong>, one woman died after reportedly spending three days without access to water or air conditioning<\/strong>. At two high school graduation ceremonies<\/strong> in Paterson, New Jersey<\/strong>, 16 people were hospitalized<\/strong> and over 150 others<\/strong> were evaluated for heat-related illnesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In Washington, DC<\/strong>, a K-Pop concert<\/strong> on Monday night<\/strong> ended early due to a spike in medical emergencies linked to the heat<\/strong>, and the Washington Monument<\/strong> remained closed on Wednesday<\/strong>. In New Hampshire<\/strong>, young hikers<\/strong> required rescue after suffering heat-related injuries<\/strong>, while in Norfolk, Massachusetts<\/strong>, two firefighters<\/strong> were hospitalized from exhaustion<\/strong> while battling a blaze under record-setting temperatures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Even hospitals in New York City and Chicago<\/strong> faced challenges keeping air conditioning and power systems<\/strong> functional under intense demand. In New York<\/strong>, Con Edison<\/strong> issued appeals for power conservation<\/strong> to prevent rolling blackouts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Athletes and events disrupted as temperatures shatter records<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the FIFA Club World Cup<\/strong> in Charlotte, North Carolina<\/strong>, Bayern Munich<\/strong> reported that players on the substitute bench<\/strong> had to remain inside the locker room<\/strong> to avoid the dangerous heat. On Tuesday<\/strong>, Augusta, Maine<\/strong> reached 100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong> \u2013 its hottest June temperature on record<\/strong>, tying the all-time high for the state capital<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Boston<\/strong> soared to 102\u00b0F (39\u00b0C)<\/strong>, its highest temperature ever recorded in June<\/strong>, tying for the third-hottest day in city history<\/strong>. Philadelphia<\/strong> saw 101\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong> on Tuesday, the first triple-digit reading<\/strong> since 2012<\/strong> and the earliest in the summer season<\/strong>. Providence, Rhode Island<\/strong>, also joined the record books with a new June high of 100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong>, while Newark, New Jersey<\/strong>, hit 103\u00b0F (39\u00b0C)<\/strong>, matching its all-time June record.<\/p>\n

In Queens<\/strong>, both John F. Kennedy International Airport<\/strong> and LaGuardia Airport<\/strong> hit 102\u00b0F (39\u00b0C)<\/strong> and 101\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong> respectively \u2013 marking unprecedented highs<\/strong> for the month of June<\/strong>. Across much of the East Coast<\/strong>, Wednesday afternoon brought temperatures into the mid to upper 90s\u00b0F (35\u201337\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Climate change raises the stakes for extreme heat<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meteorologists and climate scientists continue to underscore that heat waves<\/strong> like this one are becoming more frequent<\/strong>, intense<\/strong>, and prolonged<\/strong> due to global warming<\/strong>. According to an analysis by Climate Central<\/strong>, the Mid-Atlantic\u2019s<\/strong> record heat on Tuesday<\/strong> was at least five times more likely<\/strong> to occur in today\u2019s warmer climate<\/strong> compared to a world without fossil fuel emissions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no uncertainty<\/strong> around the fact that climate change makes heatwaves more intense and more frequent<\/strong>,\u201d said climate scientist Fredi Otto<\/strong>, who leads World Weather Attribution<\/strong>, a global project investigating the links between climate change<\/strong> and extreme events<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
