June 2025<\/strong> is shaping up to be unusually chilly<\/strong> across the Bay Area<\/strong>, with temperatures running between 1\u00b0F and 4\u00b0F (0.5\u00b0C to 2.2\u00b0C) below average<\/strong> throughout much of the region. While inland areas of the West<\/strong> bake under above-normal heat<\/strong>, the California coast<\/strong> is gripped by a reinforced marine layer<\/strong> and a persistent sea breeze<\/strong> that\u2019s keeping things cool\u2014very cool<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At Oakland International Airport<\/strong>, the average temperature so far this month<\/strong> has been a mere 59.9\u00b0F (15.5\u00b0C)<\/strong>. That\u2019s almost 3\u00b0F (1.7\u00b0C) below normal<\/strong>, and if the trend holds, June 2025<\/strong> may go down as the coldest June since 1967<\/strong> at that location. Similar patterns are playing out across the North Bay<\/strong> and South Bay<\/strong>, where temperatures have consistently lagged behind seasonal norms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At San Francisco International Airport (SFO)<\/strong>, temperatures haven’t surpassed 72\u00b0F (22.2\u00b0C)<\/strong> this month\u2014an extraordinary statistic, considering that no previous June has ever failed to reach at least 75\u00b0F (23.9\u00b0C)<\/strong> since records began in 1946<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The reason<\/strong> for this unusual chill lies in what\u2019s happening inland<\/strong>: as interior valleys<\/strong> heat up, rising hot air<\/strong> is replaced by dense, ocean-cooled air<\/strong> rushing in from the coast. This temperature differential<\/strong> acts like a natural air conditioner<\/strong> for coastal cities including San Francisco<\/strong> and Oakland<\/strong>, which are now experiencing stronger than usual sea breezes<\/strong> and a thicker-than-normal marine layer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This setup has also brought with it an abundance of fog<\/strong>. According to recent data, SFO observed overcast skies at 8 a.m. on nearly half the days this month<\/strong>\u2014a significant increase from the June average<\/strong>, when overcast skies are typically recorded only about one-third of the time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thursday\u2019s forecast<\/strong>, however, will offer slightly sunnier skies<\/strong>, especially after midday<\/strong>. Still, temperatures will remain on the cool side<\/strong>, with highs near 60\u00b0F (15.5\u00b0C)<\/strong> at beaches<\/strong> and in the low to mid-70s (21\u00b0C to 23.8\u00b0C)<\/strong> along the bay shoreline<\/strong>. Inland valleys<\/strong>, such as those in the North Bay<\/strong>, East Bay<\/strong>, and South Bay<\/strong>, should push into the 80s (26.6\u00b0C to 31.1\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On Friday<\/strong> and Saturday<\/strong>, the interior valleys<\/strong> will briefly return to summer form<\/strong>, flirting with temperatures in the 90s (32.2\u00b0C to 35\u00b0C)<\/strong>. But in San Francisco<\/strong>, the streak of sub-70\u00b0F (21.1\u00b0C) highs<\/strong> will likely continue<\/strong>, though just barely, with the city staying in the upper 60s (19.4\u00b0C to 20.5\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Oakland<\/strong> could reach the mid-70s (23.8\u00b0C)<\/strong> by Friday afternoon<\/strong>, holding steady through Saturday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

San Francisco forecast<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A drier air mass<\/strong> is pushing into the region, meaning quicker clearing<\/strong> than in recent days. Expect mostly sunny skies by afternoon<\/strong>, though northwest winds<\/strong> may gust up to 25 mph<\/strong>. Afternoon highs will vary by neighborhood: upper 50s to low 60s (14.4\u00b0C to 16.6\u00b0C)<\/strong> west of Twin Peaks<\/strong>, mid-60s (18.3\u00b0C)<\/strong> in Pacific Heights<\/strong> and North Beach<\/strong>, and upper 60s (20.5\u00b0C)<\/strong> in Mission District<\/strong>, SoMa<\/strong>, Bayview<\/strong> and Potrero Hill<\/strong>. Lows will dip to the low 50s (10\u00b0C to 11.1\u00b0C)<\/strong> with patchy fog<\/strong> overnight.<\/p>\n

North Bay forecast<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A wind shift<\/strong> from westerly to northwesterly<\/strong> will thin out morning clouds, allowing for warmer temperatures<\/strong>\u2014especially in Santa Rosa<\/strong>, where highs may hit the upper 80s (31.6\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Expect upper 70s to low 80s (25\u00b0C to 27.7\u00b0C)<\/strong> in Petaluma<\/strong>, San Rafael<\/strong>, and Vallejo<\/strong>, mid-80s (29.4\u00b0C)<\/strong> in Napa<\/strong> and Sonoma<\/strong>, and upper 80s to low 90s (31.6\u00b0C to 32.7\u00b0C)<\/strong> in Fairfield<\/strong> and Vacaville<\/strong>. Overnight lows will settle into the upper 40s to mid-50s (8.8\u00b0C to 12.7\u00b0C)<\/strong> with patchy coastal clouds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

East Bay forecast<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Morning cloud cover<\/strong> will mainly stick to areas west of the Caldecott Tunnel<\/strong>, clearing by midday<\/strong>. Afternoon highs will rise to the upper 60s to low 70s (20.5\u00b0C to 21.6\u00b0C)<\/strong> in Richmond<\/strong>, Berkeley<\/strong>, Oakland<\/strong>, and Alameda<\/strong>. Hayward<\/strong> and Fremont<\/strong> will climb into the mid-70s (23.8\u00b0C)<\/strong>, and Lamorinda<\/strong> will approach 80\u00b0F (26.6\u00b0C)<\/strong>. The interior East Bay<\/strong> will surge into the mid-80s to 90\u00b0F (29.4\u00b0C to 32.2\u00b0C)<\/strong>, especially in Antioch<\/strong> and Brentwood<\/strong>. Afternoon and evening winds<\/strong> may gust between 15 and 20 mph<\/strong>. Lows will be in the low to mid-50s (10\u00b0C to 12.7\u00b0C)<\/strong> under mostly clear skies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Pacific Coast and Peninsula forecast<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A foggy morning<\/strong> is expected, though a northwesterly breeze<\/strong> should clear skies by afternoon. Highs will reach the upper 50s to low 60s (14.4\u00b0C to 16.6\u00b0C)<\/strong> in Half Moon Bay<\/strong>, Pacifica<\/strong>, and Daly City<\/strong>, mid- to upper 60s (18.3\u00b0C to 19.4\u00b0C)<\/strong> in South San Francisco<\/strong>, San Bruno<\/strong>, Millbrae<\/strong>, and Burlingame<\/strong>, and low to mid-70s (21.1\u00b0C to 23.8\u00b0C)<\/strong> in San Mateo<\/strong> and Redwood City<\/strong>. Afternoon gusts<\/strong> could hit 25 mph<\/strong>, and lows will dip into the low to mid-50s (10\u00b0C to 12.7\u00b0C)<\/strong> under clear skies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

South Bay and Santa Cruz forecast<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Thursday<\/strong> will be the warmest day this week<\/strong> for Santa Clara<\/strong> and Santa Cruz counties<\/strong>. San Jose<\/strong> will likely approach 80\u00b0F (26.6\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Areas along the bay<\/strong>, including Palo Alto<\/strong> and Sunnyvale<\/strong>, will see mid- to upper 70s (23.8\u00b0C to 25\u00b0C)<\/strong>, while Saratoga<\/strong>, Cupertino<\/strong>, and Morgan Hill<\/strong> should land in the mid-80s (29.4\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Boulder Creek<\/strong> and Ben Lomond<\/strong> will range between the upper 70s and low 80s (25\u00b0C to 27.7\u00b0C)<\/strong>, while Santa Cruz<\/strong> will sit around 70\u00b0F (21.1\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Lows will settle in the mid-50s (12.7\u00b0C)<\/strong> inland and low 50s (10\u00b0C)<\/strong> along the Monterey Bay<\/strong>, with patchy fog<\/strong> expected.<\/p>\n
