Friday, June 28, 2025 \u2013 JACKSON, Mississippi<\/strong> \u2014 A wave of intense summer weather<\/strong> is settling over Mississippi<\/strong> this weekend, as severe storms<\/strong> return with damaging wind gusts<\/strong>, frequent lightning<\/strong>, and oppressive heat<\/strong>. According to the National Weather Service in Jackson<\/strong>, much of eastern<\/strong> and southern Mississippi<\/strong> faces a marginal risk<\/strong> of isolated severe thunderstorms<\/strong> through Friday evening<\/strong>, with winds possibly topping 60 mph (97 km\/h)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is exactly what we’ve been experiencing all week,\u201d said Alan Campbell<\/strong>, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson<\/strong>. \u201cWith all the heat and humidity<\/strong>, we’re sitting in a very unstable air mass<\/strong>, especially during the peak of the afternoon heat<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n Areas south of a line from Amite County to eastern Noxubee County<\/strong> should be on alert, as storms in that corridor are most likely to turn severe<\/strong>. Even outside that zone, scattered storms<\/strong> can bring torrential rainfall<\/strong> and frequent lightning<\/strong>, especially during the afternoon and early evening<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Campbell emphasized the risk of wind damage<\/strong>, stating, \u201cAny storm that forms could produce wind gusts up to or above 60 mph<\/strong>. Along with that, expect heavy downpours<\/strong> and a lot of lightning activity<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n The weekend weather pattern<\/strong> stays firmly in place, locked into what Campbell calls the \u201ctypical summer setup\u201d<\/strong> for Mississippi<\/strong> \u2014 hot<\/strong>, humid<\/strong>, and with daily afternoon thunderstorms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In Jackson<\/strong>, Friday\u2019s high<\/strong> will reach around 92\u00b0F (33\u00b0C)<\/strong>, with a heat index<\/strong> peaking near 100\u00b0F (38\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Storm chances sit at 50%<\/strong>, mainly between late morning and early evening<\/strong>. Nights will remain muggy<\/strong>, with lows in the low 70s\u00b0F (21\u201323\u00b0C)<\/strong> and partly cloudy skies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n On Saturday and Sunday<\/strong>, highs will hover around 91\u00b0F (33\u00b0C)<\/strong>, but with heat index values soaring to 102\u00b0F (39\u00b0C)<\/strong>. Each day brings an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms<\/strong>, particularly after 10 a.m.<\/strong>, making the early morning hours the driest window<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Farther south, in Hattiesburg<\/strong>, the pattern mirrors Jackson but with slightly higher rain chances<\/strong>. Friday afternoon<\/strong> will bring likely thunderstorms<\/strong>, especially after 5 p.m.<\/strong>, with a high near 93\u00b0F (34\u00b0C)<\/strong> and heat index near 98\u00b0F (37\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Saturday<\/strong> carries a 70% chance<\/strong> of rain and storms, mainly after mid-morning<\/strong>, while Sunday\u2019s storm chance climbs to 80%<\/strong>.
