This <strong>dense cloud of mineral-rich dust<\/strong>, originating from the <strong>Cape Verde Islands<\/strong> near the coast of <strong>Senegal<\/strong>, is being carried by <strong>east-southeasterly trade winds<\/strong> across the <strong>Atlantic Basin<\/strong>, reaching the <strong>eastern Caribbean<\/strong> and now heading into the <strong>Gulf of Mexico<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As of <strong>Friday, June 27<\/strong>, NASA&#8217;s <strong>Goddard Earth Observing System<\/strong> models show the <strong>thickest portion of the dust plume<\/strong> hovering over the <strong>Caribbean Sea<\/strong>, especially near <strong>Hispaniola<\/strong>, <strong>Cuba<\/strong>, and the <strong>Bahamas<\/strong>, with <strong>another plume already forming<\/strong> off <strong>West Africa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Dust cloud arrival across Texas: what to expect day by day<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Friday<\/strong>: The <strong>main core of the dust<\/strong> remains concentrated over <strong>Cuba<\/strong>, the <strong>Dominican Republic<\/strong>, and the <strong>Bahamas<\/strong>. Some <strong>fine dust particles<\/strong> will begin creeping into the <strong>eastern Gulf of Mexico<\/strong>, but <strong>Texas will remain unaffected<\/strong> at this stage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunday and Monday<\/strong>: The <strong>outer edge of the plume<\/strong> starts moving westward, reaching the <strong>Texas coast<\/strong> by <strong>late Sunday evening<\/strong>. Expect <strong>deteriorating air quality<\/strong>, especially in <strong>coastal areas<\/strong> like <strong>Houston<\/strong> and <strong>Corpus Christi<\/strong>. However, the <strong>increased particle density<\/strong> is likely to result in <strong>brilliantly colored sunsets<\/strong> across the region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday and Wednesday<\/strong>: The <strong>thickest part of the dust cloud<\/strong> is forecast to <strong>blanket much of Texas<\/strong>. <strong>Visibility may drop<\/strong> due to <strong>hazy skies<\/strong>, particularly across <strong>Houston<\/strong>, <strong>San Antonio<\/strong>, <strong>Austin<\/strong>, and potentially even <strong>Dallas-Fort Worth<\/strong>. <strong>Air quality levels<\/strong> are expected to <strong>decline significantly<\/strong>, with <strong>moderate to high concentrations of particulate matter<\/strong> in the lower atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>By <strong>noon Tuesday<\/strong>, dust models show the <strong>bulk of the cloud hovering near the Texas coast<\/strong>, while <strong>another wave of dust<\/strong> closes in on <strong>Cuba<\/strong> and <strong>Hispaniola<\/strong>. By <strong>6 p.m. Sunday<\/strong>, the <strong>dust plume will already be inside the Gulf<\/strong>, steadily advancing toward the <strong>Lone Star State<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Health impacts from the Saharan dust cloud<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Saharan Air Layer<\/strong> brings with it <strong>high volumes of fine particles<\/strong>, including <strong>silica<\/strong>, <strong>clay<\/strong>, and <strong>quartz<\/strong>, all capable of <strong>infiltrating deep into the lungs<\/strong>. While most healthy adults may only experience <strong>mild eye, nose, or throat irritation<\/strong>, individuals with <strong>sensitive respiratory systems<\/strong>, such as <strong>young children<\/strong>, the <strong>elderly<\/strong>, and people with <strong>asthma or cardiovascular disease<\/strong>, may face <strong>more serious health issues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Allergy flare-ups<\/strong>, <strong>asthma exacerbations<\/strong>, and general <strong>respiratory discomfort<\/strong> are likely.
