Arizona<\/strong>, a state known for its arid deserts and intense heat<\/strong>, has experienced some of the most extreme temperature swings<\/strong> in U.S. history. From scorching highs<\/strong> in Lake Havasu City<\/strong> to the bitter cold<\/strong> of Hawley Lake<\/strong>, the contrast is as dramatic as the state\u2019s landscape.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n On June 29, 1994<\/strong>, Lake Havasu City<\/strong>, located in western Arizona<\/strong> near the California<\/strong> border, reached a sweltering 128\u00b0F (53.3\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014Arizona\u2019s hottest temperature ever recorded<\/strong>. That same day, nearby Laughlin, Nevada<\/strong>, registered 125\u00b0F (51.7\u00b0C), and New Mexico<\/strong> came close with 122\u00b0F (50\u00b0C) at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant<\/strong>, just outside Loving<\/strong>. It was a blistering week across the Southwest<\/strong>, and the records stand to this day.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n But Arizona<\/strong> has also seen intense cold<\/strong>, far from the desert image many associate with the state. On January 7, 1971<\/strong>, Hawley Lake<\/strong>, nestled in the White Mountains<\/strong>, dropped to an unimaginable -40\u00b0F (-40\u00b0C)<\/strong>. It’s the kind of temperature more commonly found in Alaska<\/strong> or Montana<\/strong>, where the nation’s lowest recorded temperatures have dipped as far as -80\u00b0F (-62.2\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n In addition to its temperature extremes, Arizona<\/strong> has also logged astonishing precipitation records<\/strong>. On September 4, 1970<\/strong>, Workman Creek<\/strong> received 11.4 inches<\/strong> of rain in just 24 hours<\/strong>. And on February 25, 1987<\/strong>, the mountain community of Alpine<\/strong> was buried under 38.0 inches<\/strong> of snow in a single day\u2014a rare feat in a predominantly desert state<\/strong>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n While Death Valley, California<\/strong>, remains the holder of the world\u2019s hottest temperature<\/strong>\u2014134\u00b0F (56.7\u00b0C)<\/strong> in July 1913<\/strong>, and more recently 130\u00b0F (54.4\u00b0C)<\/strong> on July 9, 2021<\/strong>\u2014Arizona<\/strong> still ranks among the hottest U.S. states<\/strong> historically.
