From <strong>scorching highs<\/strong> in <strong>Lake Havasu City<\/strong> to the <strong>bitter cold<\/strong> of <strong>Hawley Lake<\/strong>, the contrast is as dramatic as the state\u2019s landscape.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>On June 29, 1994<\/strong>, <strong>Lake Havasu City<\/strong>, located in <strong>western Arizona<\/strong> near the <strong>California<\/strong> border, reached a <strong>sweltering 128\u00b0F (53.3\u00b0C)<\/strong>\u2014<strong>Arizona\u2019s hottest temperature ever recorded<\/strong>. That same day, nearby <strong>Laughlin, Nevada<\/strong>, registered 125\u00b0F (51.7\u00b0C), and <strong>New Mexico<\/strong> came close with 122\u00b0F (50\u00b0C) at the <strong>Waste Isolation Pilot Plant<\/strong>, just outside <strong>Loving<\/strong>. It was a <strong>blistering week across the Southwest<\/strong>, and the records stand to this day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But <strong>Arizona<\/strong> has also seen <strong>intense cold<\/strong>, far from the desert image many associate with the state. On <strong>January 7, 1971<\/strong>, <strong>Hawley Lake<\/strong>, nestled in the <strong>White Mountains<\/strong>, dropped to an unimaginable <strong>-40\u00b0F (-40\u00b0C)<\/strong>. It&#8217;s the kind of temperature more commonly found in <strong>Alaska<\/strong> or <strong>Montana<\/strong>, where the nation&#8217;s lowest recorded temperatures have dipped as far as <strong>-80\u00b0F (-62.2\u00b0C)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its temperature extremes, <strong>Arizona<\/strong> has also logged astonishing <strong>precipitation records<\/strong>. On <strong>September 4, 1970<\/strong>, <strong>Workman Creek<\/strong> received <strong>11.4 inches<\/strong> of rain in just <strong>24 hours<\/strong>. And on <strong>February 25, 1987<\/strong>, the mountain community of <strong>Alpine<\/strong> was buried under <strong>38.0 inches<\/strong> of snow in a single day\u2014<strong>a rare feat in a predominantly desert state<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While <strong>Death Valley, California<\/strong>, remains the holder of the <strong>world\u2019s hottest temperature<\/strong>\u2014<strong>134\u00b0F (56.7\u00b0C)<\/strong> in <strong>July 1913<\/strong>, and more recently <strong>130\u00b0F (54.4\u00b0C)<\/strong> on <strong>July 9, 2021<\/strong>\u2014<strong>Arizona<\/strong> still ranks among the <strong>hottest U.S. states<\/strong> historically. Its <strong>128\u00b0F (53.3\u00b0C)<\/strong> record ties it closely to the desert extremes of <strong>Nevada<\/strong> and <strong>New Mexico<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This range of temperature\u2014from <strong>triple-digit summer peaks<\/strong> to <strong>sub-zero winter lows<\/strong>\u2014makes <strong>Arizona<\/strong> one of the <strong>most climatically diverse<\/strong> states in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arizona, a state known for its arid deserts and intense heat, has experienced some of the most extreme temperature swings in U.S. history.
