Mississippi<\/strong> may not immediately come to mind when thinking of temperature extremes, but its climate history<\/strong> tells a different story. The state has witnessed scorching heat<\/strong>, bitter cold<\/strong>, and intense precipitation events<\/strong> that remain among the most remarkable in the United States<\/strong>.<\/p>\n On July 29, 1930<\/strong>, the town of Holly Springs<\/strong>, located in the northern part of Mississippi<\/strong>, reached a sweltering 115\u00b0F (46.1\u00b0C)<\/strong>. This remains the highest temperature<\/strong> ever officially recorded in the state. The heat wave that summer hit much of the Southeast<\/strong>, and Holly Springs<\/strong>\u2014a town just south of the Tennessee<\/strong> border\u2014became an unexpected hotspot in more ways than one.<\/p>\n At the other end of the thermometer, Corinth<\/strong>, another town in northern Mississippi<\/strong>, set the state\u2019s all-time coldest temperature<\/strong> on January 30, 1966<\/strong>, when the mercury plummeted to a frigid -19\u00b0F (-28.3\u00b0C)<\/strong>. This kind of deep freeze<\/strong> is rare for Mississippi<\/strong>, and that particular winter<\/strong> remains etched in the region\u2019s meteorological memory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Columbus<\/strong>, located in eastern Mississippi<\/strong>, holds the state record for the most precipitation in a 24-hour period<\/strong>. On July 9, 1968<\/strong>, 15.68 inches (398.3 mm)<\/strong> of rain fell in a single day, likely the result of tropical moisture<\/strong> linked to a summer storm system.<\/p>\n Snowfall isn\u2019t common in most of Mississippi<\/strong>, but on December 23, 1963<\/strong>, Mount Pleasant<\/strong>, a small town in the north<\/strong>, recorded 18.0 inches (45.7 cm)<\/strong> of snow in just 24 hours. That remains the heaviest single-day snowfall<\/strong> ever documented in the state, an extraordinary amount by Southern standards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n While Mississippi\u2019s<\/strong> highs and lows are significant, they\u2019re still far from the most extreme in the country. California\u2019s Death Valley<\/strong> holds the world record with a scorching 134\u00b0F (56.7\u00b0C)<\/strong> recorded in July 1913<\/strong>, and again reached 130\u00b0F (54.4\u00b0C)<\/strong> as recently as July 9, 2021<\/strong>.
